Gentoo. It's source-only so everything has to be compiled.
But it's very easy to install new software... To install X (and EVERYTHING it requires), you type:
emerge xfree
And that's it!
Installation is a back to basics one though. Not a very easy distro to install.
Red Hat is good if you're lazy 'coz it's just so easy to install.
I've heard good things about Debian, but I've never tried it.

Bah, Gentoo installs on x86, sparc, amd64, ppc, ppc64, alpha, hppa, and mips processors.
And I'm sure Red Hat can do even more.

Nark, they love it for good reason
I <3 debian
KOFFEE-BLACK Good on you I did this also and never looked back! The only problem with having an in-depth understanding of Linux is that Windows looks even worse!
Windows has always sucked, but when you know there is a FAR SUPERIOR, COMPLETELY FREE AND OPEN SOURCE alternative available, its easy to get heavily frustrated when people come whining If only they spent a few weeks learning a new system they would save YEARS in lost productivity, and add YEARS to their life due to lower stress levels.
No exaggeration of course
It is even worse for me, working in IT, and not being able to change everyone over due to SOE However, the servers have been converted where possible

Well, I have to do my work on a Windoze box, even though I know that I'll be twice as productive if they allowed me to convert my workstation to a Linux b0x3n...

Me too, I work for a small company that, amongst other things, writes custom web based software in VB.NET (/me throws up)
I shit you not, I have written perl scripts to generate some of the code, and do ALL the design in vim. I CANNOT STAND the visual designer.
So yeah, I have a windows laptop, but it is made usable by OpenOffice instead of Microsoft Office (I get all MS software for nothing, and use OpenOffice by choice) Firefox instead of Internet Explorer, Thunderbird instead of Outlook, Putty and WinSCP so I can get access to real boxes, gvim for Windows, XChat for the companies internal IRC server (Running on a debian box ) I do like photoshop and use that over gimp most of the time.

hmm, i just installed redhat 9.0 yesterday, after executing my windows XP installation...
at the moment, it works brilliantly, but i just cant seem to get it to work on my TV, because i dont have room for a monitor, nor the funds to by an LCD donk.
so im installing 2003 server windows ASAP... i have an 80GB drive and partitioned it to use 15 GB for the linux partition, and the 61GB left for windows music games n shit...
yes 15+61 doesnt equal 80 but it takes too long to explain...

Not really - 80 * 1000 / 1024 = ~78 which is ~15 + ~61

actually its 76 GB but what the hell, im talking about the n00bies (not that anythings wrong with that)
the capacity of your drive is done using a formula of cylinders, sectors and some other shit..
the manufactures however, instead of having a GB defined as 1024 MB, as it should be, they use 1000 MB, which is why when you get a hard drive, its never at full capacity...

Plus the filesystem that goes onto the partition will eat up some space for all its indexing tables, recovery data, etc, etc, etc.
