icon9.gif  Where's my petrol going? Mon, 28 October 2002 22:03 Go to next message
Hello all,

I filled my car up on Sunday afternoon, I've done 60km since then and used half a tank of petrol. Where is it all going? I haven't been driving it hard because I just got it back on the road. There is no fuel leak's that I can find, I've had my idel adjusted but I don't think that my idel speed would put such a dent in my fuel consumption. Any help would be appreicated because I can't afford to run my car.

Check your petrol cap. My TA22 used to leak fuel going around corners when I filled it up because the cap wasn't sealing properly. If the weather was warm I would also notice it would go down quicker due to evaporation.

How do you know you've used half a tank of fuel? I wouldn't rely on the fuel gauge, those things are notoriously inaccurate...

My fuel guage has always been accurate suprisingly enough. One time when it was on the red I spluttered into a petrol station.

Midge, I replaced my fuel cap in summer because of that reason. I don't have any fuel streaks on my paint from the cap, and I live in Melbourne so it sure isn't evaporating from the heat.
Also is that the pic of your Torana? pretty sad Sad

I've got that useless Hayns manual which of course tells me nothing!! Mad

That is my Torana. the chrome hanging off of it is the bumper of the sigma you can see in the back ground!
I agree about the haynes manual, that was a waste of $45.
Maybe check the pipes on the inside of the boot, like the fuel evaporator etc although if you have lost that much fuel it should be stinking out the inside of the car.

Poor Torana, not to worried about the sigma. It's so depressing. Crying or Very Sad

My haynes manual came with the car so I didn't waste any money on it. It trys to cover too many makes in one book. A 71 celica is nothing like an 85. Mad

I opened up my boot last night and I couldn't smell anything in there. Could it be to do with I've got a pretty bad oil leak (one of my gaskets or my O ring on my timing case haven't sealed properly) I keep toping it up every time I drive and that only to and from the station. Haven't had a chance to look at it yet but should do that tonight. Sad
