Which Year 7MGTE should I get? Wed, 09 February 2005 12:24 Go to next message
Hey All,

I am confused in which year of Supra/Soarer to get for my 7M conversion for the MA61. Apparently I require a narrow body MA70 because of the snorkel which sits on the side of the fender
which is depicted-> CLICK HERE FOR IMAGE

Or should I look for a wide body Supra and get the intercooler pipes custom made or source a narrow body Supra snorkel thingy?

For a head gasket, how thick/thing should I go for? I intend to run factory/stock boost.

Cheers.

doesnt matter what year or model you get it out of. Shape of the car didnt change the motor in the slightest. MZ21 7m's are possible for you to use as well...

If its going into an MA61, why would it matter what it was like in either model ma70/ mz21??

you wont get the wrong stuff either way. make sure you buy a manual one, they'll go for about 3k, but seriously worth it if you every want to hot the 7m up (you know you will!) I can run you through how to make the r154 fit also.

At the moment I want to run the Auto because it has been fully recondition and it would make the conversion slighly easier for me.

My god! Doesn't matter which one you get, they're all just as prone to blowing head gaskets as each other Laughing

ever tried to set up gear linkages? Manual is easier believe me! All you need is an OXY, two people and a large hammer to make an r154 fit.

Tim,

Like what V8_MA61 said, it doesn't really matter which motor you get. I have the MZ21 7MGTE in mine, and it worked just fine.

The only difference between the years, I have been told , is a slightly different ECU or something along that nature. Something to do with a HAC sensor on the ECU that detects altitude (or some shit like that).

But then, I might be wrong Razz

Which auto?
The stock 5M-E one?

If so, that won't have a hope in hell of living behind a 7MGTE

Basically there are two differences, and it relates to the years. I believe that it is pre'88 and post '88.

One of the main changes was that the pre '88 had a different crank and the redline was 6,500 rpm, and the later one had a fully counterweighted crank and a 6,250 redline. This is also the change point for the HAC sensor as mentioned.

There is no difference re IC pipes, you'll have to make them yourself/get them fabbed.

Email RA65Sleeka, as he bought the IC pipes from my MA61 - 7M-GTE conversion, and it used a Soarer 7M IC. He is now doing other pipes, so this may be a quick and cheap start for you.

Look at the first few pics and it shows some of the IC pipes, and some further down show where the hole goes.

ANy other queries, just PM or assk here.

He's right you know, and the same about the gearbox as well. Stick with the 7M auto or go manual (even a W58 will be fine)

Cheers

Thats a big call.

Anyway, I'll have a IC setup for a 7MGTE into MA61 for sale in a few weeks.
Its not the best setup, but it won't be very expensive.

PM me if interested.

Haha, the conversion has only taken me a couple of months, it's everything else that has turned it into Project Decade, that and my uncanny ability to lose things.

Actually there was a change to the internal block design in late 89. Toyota increased the width of the webbing that runs to the main caps.

As pointed out the crank also became fully counter balanced.

Didn't you just recently 7M power the XX ? What is going in next, or are you just upgrading the IC setup ? If so, details Very Happy

He bought it 7M powered. The engine is going into Damo's (TRD 83) XX, but he has an intercooler like mine.
