solenoids - what am i looking for ?

There's been some talk lately on the forums..about getting solenoids from wreckers..to dummy up for the waste gate actuators...setting it up for hi/lo boost control.
Does anyone have a picture of what i'm supposed to looked for ?
Or from what part of the vehicle i can get one ?
Thanks for the time
Cheers

it depends, what are you trying to achieve using what electronics?
If you are looking for something simple with just an "ON/OFF" control for stock boost or to bleed off a fixed amount from the wastegate line, then you have to T into the wastegate line, and use the solenoid to bleed off air, using a restrictor to limit the amount bled off. This will be a "hit and miss" affair to get the right boost level...
If however, you are looking for complete electronic control of the solenoid (which is a Pulse Width Moduled signal controlled device), then you will have a much better boost control system. If you give the solenoid a PWM (or duty cycle %) signal, it will pulse accordingly and work like a tap - ie, a 50% duty cycle will open the solenoid 50%.
THere is a pretty cheap kit available from Jaycar Electronics which controls these solenoids in this exact way, drop me a PM if you have questions.
If you want proper boost control, the second option is the only way. You can get these solenoids from some Nissan engines like the RB series (afaik), and some others.... but you can also buy them new (i have a contact locally ~AUD$150).

cant we use a simple solenoid to be used to control boost in a dual setting boost controller
as in -- have a bleed valve setup and run the solenoid in between the bleed valve and the normal vaccum hose to the wastegate then when the stock bost is needed have the solenoid off and when u want more boost turn the solenoid on and have more boost via the bleed valve
in that case we only need a on and off solenoid
hope that makes some sense

yes you can.... but in my mind its just such a poor method of boost control. But that is just me.

YEAH COOL i was thinking about doing that
but then ur idea sounds good too use the solenoid for the bleed valve and control it via the jaycar module
but then wont that affect the tuning of ur car , as in the car will be tuned for 10 psi , then ur turn the boost up on the boost controller using the solenoid and the fuel settign and all goes out the door
will that be a problem
unless u set the boost to a standard level and dont change it, lollllllll

it all depends on what your car is tuned to.
What car do you have?

your 1g-gte should be able to take about 17psi before it maxes out. The ECU is mapped by AIR FLOW (from air flow meter), and is mapped up to an air flow high enought to allow almost 17psi +/-2psi thanks to air density.
the jaycar kit is a case, circuit board and bag of parts for you to build yourself.
no solenoid.
hand controller is another kit.

hmm i tghought 14psi was the most id be able to go till it hit fuel cut or whatever cut that happens around there
so u need the hand controller to actually tamper with the boost setting ithought it would be all built in and have knobs that u can turn to set the boost
so what ya reckon the whole cost will be is it cheaper to just get a solenoid and use it in the dual setting option
and also wa6 cars can i look for the solenoid , the wreckers near me only have really old cars
