4AGE piston differences Tue, 29 October 2002 01:02 Go to next message
This is mainly for my general knowledge but i hope someone out there (Toby/Bill) has seen a few more 4AGE intrenals, can fill in the gaps.

Ok its my understanding so far that these are defineately 86KW pistons, dished centre accounts for lower compression??

http://us.f1.yahoofs.com/users/fdc6ad13/bc/My+Photos/86KW.jpg?bcgFX59A8OaTmT0G

Its the next two pistons that im confused about
First is the ACL Replacemant 100Kw. no dishing, flat in centre higher compression??

http://us.f1.yahoofs.com/users/fdc6ad13/bc/My+Photos/100KWACL.jpg?bcgFX59A6WG8.or2

The next one is the one i just pulled out of my car, 100KW toyota with a raised centre (presumably higher compression again)

http://us.f1.yahoofs.com/users/fdc6ad13/bc/My+Photos/100KWtoyota.jpg?bcgFX59APvMw7CwM

Now to my question, is the ACL replacement 100KW piston that way to save manufacturing costs or is there are 3 types of pistons???

Cheers
Ben

Manufacturing cost would have been the main consideration behind the design of the top of the ACL piston.

Although I’m sure ACL has considered the compression ratio in their design, and should be no difference between them.

Although Toyota isn’t stupid, and does a lot of engineering research, So the raised center may be beneficial in some way.

The factory toyota 86kw pistons I have here dont look like that top picture. The valve reliefs are not as deep, which would maybe suggest that the deck height of the whole piston top might be lower to drop compression rather??

the first is a 8-1{early gze} piston the second is 8.9-1{late gze} and the third is a 100kw 9.4 or 10.3 or something like that.
there is 4 diffrent pistons from memory, been awhile since i looked into it. i have had every one of them at times and im pretty sure the above is right. cc them then youll know for sure.

Just a note, the deck height (the distance from the top of the Pin to the very outside edge of the piston anyway)is the same for all the pistons, The toyota one is taller overall due to the raised centre, as for being GZE pistons they are not marketed as that so ????

Ben,
The top piston does look very similar to an FE piston. It's hard to see the valve angle to be 100% sure from the photo, but also I really haven't see a set of 86Kw pistons either. The only differences I can say is that there's more "raised" area's than on an OEM FE piston.
The second ones are 100kw replacement for sure, I have a set of forgies that look Identical to that in two engines, one a 4age, the other is my 7AFE, and they sure do have a high comp that standard, but that's due to the piston heights. see pic belowhttp://members.ozemail.com.au/~johnek/pistons.jpg

Yup, that looks just like the 86kw FWD ones I have. I think the number stamped on top is the size indicator. Toyota use different sizes if neccessary in individual cylinders to match the tolerances for that particular bore perfectly.

Thanks, Grega
You can clearly see the 100Kw would have a lot more comp, if the combustion chamber of the 100Kw head isn't different to the 86Kw....
