ibm, sony and toshiba are unvieling their "cell" cpu at a semiconductor conference in the us at the moment. from what i have read its 9 cpu cores on one chip, 1 main cpu delegaing tasks to the further 8. each cpu has their own small ram built on the chip, simplifing cache design and speeding things up heaps.
completely different design from current x86 based and risc cpus, that could end up toppling intel.
BUT the "emotion engine" in the ps2 was ment to revolutionise things and ended up being all hype.
still, the ps3 is gonna rock, i hope the xbox team has something up their sleave to compete i did hear rumors the xbox 2 was gonna use a cell also but dunno.
real-time ray-traced gran turismo? oh me likey!

Sony love to mega hype their next console. It is impressive on paper but it still remains to be seen in the real world.

edit: but nivida is making the gpu, so not sure how much is processed directly on the cpu or sent to the gpu.
|
Correction: nvidia are bring back the GPU, which was a common component of 1960s computers but was dumped by IBM and Intel.
Of course the nvidia GPU is better and faster, but the concept is by no means a new one.

GPU, AGP, PCI, PCI-X, ISA, CPU, PSU, MOBO, RAM, ROM, BIOS, CMOS, CD, DVD, HDD, FDD
confusing as hell, sad thing is, i know what every one of them stands for
why dont they stick a pc in a case and make it a console, xbox was a good idea

yeah the concept of a separate gpu is not a new idea, but the cpu design of this cell is new. i was just saying that it is unclear how much of the graphics processing is going to be delegated to the gpu.

i remember hearing that the x-box 2 was possibly gonna utilise a power 4 drived (single or dual core) IBM cpu or power 5 IBM cpu. these are used in IBM servers and a derivative of the power 4 chips powers the apple G5 line.

Yes, the PS3 will rock when it's first released just like the PS2 did. But look at the PS2 today. It sucks for graphics. Can anyone say GTA: jaggie city? (san andreas). That game will be much better on PC.

the idea of a console is, you sit down and play a game, the advantage of this is, youn dont have to deal with multitasking, and you know that every game you buy meets the hardware requirements, so you dont have to spend so much upgrading
i have an xbox and ps2, im glad to say they both rule, and i bought them, REALLY REALLY REALLY cheap, and im glad i did..
good fun when you have mates over, lord knows i can beat them in any racing game out there
who gives a shit how many gigaflops the flippin thing has, and how big the hard drive is, as long as you can lpay the game and save the game, im not fussed

gta: sa was definately pushing the ps2's limits, jaggies everwhere and choppy framerate when there is lots going on. i am also curious to know how much this game decreases the life of the optical drive since it streams the low-level geometry from the dvd CONSTANTLY, to acheive the no-load times. the disk never stops when playing it.

well forza motor sport is going to challange GT4 and is going to beat it on gameplay, they use a new physic engine that makes the engine modifications responed more like they would in real life, you can change the engine in the car, body parts, and most things you can think of. Forza may not offer as many vechiles as Gt4 but I bet half the cars that were on Gt4 you wouldn't touch with a ten foot pole.

played Forza.. lam0rz like teh gay with HIV.... just bcoz it has rice factor like body kit and fulli sick damage...
dood gt4 would still own every car game in existence despite what u think it lacks!!
if i have 300 bucks to waste id get that 900 degree steering wheel and itll ROCK FORZAs ASS!!! LOOSE!!!
imagine with steering radious like that dodgy initial D in the arcades, but with the physics of more realistic and accurate car behaviours...
btw ive been hearing that theres no ae86 in gt4..
is this true?

There is an ae86 in GT4.
Apparently they've got the cars done so well in GT4 that when they had a demo of it on the Nurburgring track, cars accurate so that they are a couple of milliseconds off.
That's damn impressive.
The steering wheel and pedals set thingy is supposed to be realistic in size and as WANTED_AE86 said if you can decipher his l33tz0r h4x0r sp34kz0r is that it's a 900 degree steering wheel.
Should be VERY interesting

YES! I like your attitude!
Although... I'm not THAT oldschool.
I don't care much for high res graphics. I played Day of Defeat and Fire Arms (HL mods) over Castle Wolf. HL looked crap compared to the RTCW engine, but the game was just a bajillion times better.

At the end of the day no matter how much technology they put into it, its up to the developer to utilise it
and these days theyed rather push games out faster to make money then to make full utilisation of the technology
Best example is the PS2, look at most games the graphics are sub par, then look at a game like GT4, it looks like its almost running on different hardware they have taken the time to use the full potention of the PS2, and it being so complicated, takes alot of time
Where as Xbox just reals off good looking games like there is no tomorow, its DirectX based, relativly simple etc etc. And can produce nice results on short timeframes

If there was a hole in your motherboard i'd be blaming the repairer - he's talking shit. the 50002 model burns out a coil in the laser, which then blows up the LA chip (controller). No Holes in board but expensive to repair.
San Andreas moves the laser back and forth loading all the textures continuously - the full size ps2s all wear out the teeth on the laser arm and start slipping. I work in a game console "repair" shop, and you wouldn't not believe how many machines came in with a grinding noise after GTA:SA was released.
