fitting GZE pistons to bigport 4age?

hey all. i'm considering turbocharging my bigport 4age and was thinking about getting GZE pistons to be
on the safe side (and allow craploads more boost ). however, i read up on Bill Sherwood's page
that the bigport's conrods have 18mm gudgeon pins vs the GZE's 20mm pins. is it still possible for the
GZE pistons to be fitted onto the bigport crank/conrods or would i be better off just getting
a GZE bottom end and putting the bigport head onto that? cheers peoples.
eddie.

bugger. if it were a later 7 rib engine it would have the 20mm gudgeon pins.
you could swap the crank and rods from a later 7 rib 4age into your block, but then you might as well use the whole 7 rib engine with it's stronger block if you sourced the lot. or of course find a 4agze and be done with it.
if you got a bigport 4agze you wont need to swap your head over either. unless you wanted a the smallport 4agze because of it's higher c/r.

hmmm. so maybe i should just turbo it with stock internals, wait till it blows and then replace everything with a GZE engine?

"jspec" on 4ag posted some impressive results running gze pistons on bluetop rods. He sold the ze piston/blue rod combo or you could send him your rods and he'd return them with ze pistons fitted. It sounded like a 'simple' machine shop process to me (from an email).
This was a couple years back, but I recall him saying he really preferred the free rev nature of the lighter bluetop assy on boost.
Of course you could spend the 'piston upgrade' money towards better engine management and get good results from 9.4:1. You don't have to blow it up.... unless you want to, eh. ze pistons wont bail you out from bad tuning

its a given that i'll be running an aftermarket ecu. either microtech or (if i have enough) a motec M4. fitting the pistons to bigport rods sounds interesting though. don't suppose you remember how much the setup cost?

the 3 rib block is strong enough for most things. ever heard of one splitting? i havnt
its possible to machine the rods out to take the 20mm gudgeons.
if you can get a later crank (42mm) use that with 20v silver top rods (same as late ze) they are the best combonation of strength and weight. no need to spend heaps on a whole ze, the only different parts are the pistons and rings. every thing else is that same. also bluetop cams are supposed to be better than the later ones for a boosted set up

wouldn't machining out 2mm out of a conrod compromise its strength?

machining anything can comprimise strength.
you would have to consider what you plan to use it for etc. but i have heard of it being done with no problems
