search google for "serial surfer' - it may help with testing of software Wink

otherwise, you'll be probably searching for bittorrent files.

If you're new to mac, get a visual how-to OS X (version 10.3 )from Dymocks or similar - if you're used to them - get an logon at <http://discussions.info.apple.com/> so you can post queries on specific apple apps.

good choice of laptop!

cheers,
Charles

www.versiontracker.com

has heaps of stuff like programs and little applications.

also maybe join www.spymac.com their forums in the US are huge with apple users and they are some really creative guys.

apple.com has some good articles etc and tips for OSX.

as said above, nice laptop choice.

I am typing this message on my G4 dual processer tower. I am a bit of an apple nut and have an apple at home too. funnily enough i don't own an ipod yet Confused

I'm a reluctant user... work thought they were a good idea. I disagree. 1 button will never be enough.

plus the brand new mac at work has crashed more times in the same time period than my ghetto pc running microsoft homo software

the only time I restart my G4 powerbook has been for system updates

it runs like a dream, I don't shut it down for months and doesn't care, if an app crashes (ie, microsoft word, or excel) nothing else is affected

freaking awesome, and I have a 4 button mouse with scroll

Sites:

go to www.newstoday.com then, in the right hand colum, click on "find" and type in "OSX" you will find a thread with 250+ replies mostly with links to some of the amazing free apps people have written for OSX

and I rate this page as ESSENTIAL

http://whatdoiknow.org/archives/cat_os_x_software. shtml

^^ awesome

and dont' forget http://www.versiontracker.com

I'm a reluctant user... work thought they were a good idea. I disagree. 1 button will never be enough.

tell work to go to office works, buy a box of cheapest/lightest logitech optical mice with scroll wheel (Bluetooth would benice too), return to workplace, toss all the stupid one button mice in bin and use proper mice

we did... no drivers to download, no need to 'detect new hardware', just plug in and keep working.

back to the topic:

install the developer tools that come with the OS so you get an X11 client, then grab a free copy of OpenOffice <http://www.openoffice.org> or if you're brave, try NeoOfficeJ <http://www.planamesa.com/neojava>

make ripping radio-stations to disk easy with Streamripper

Mplayer and VLC are handy opensource alternatives to Quicktime player and windows media player.

Fire is a handy multi-protocol chat client (like Trillian)

TomatoeTorrent is a highly configurable (if somewhat cryptic) bittorrent client

If you're sharing your mac at home with PC's running windoze or linux or other, get Sharpoint to better define what to share, how and to who.

If your mac is exposed to the internet, get Brickhouse to get finer control over the built-in firewall

just about all of these are open source developments - simply google for the software title - the right URL will probably read something like softwaretitle.org or softwaretitle.sourceforge.net

another source is the ozmac archive <http://www.ausmac.net/> but unless you read macworld, you'll be flying blind.

I thought the one button would be perfect for you. One less place for your hair to get caught Razz .

Mine sites there, 24/7 on, maybe restarted once a month, also runs as a terminal for a unix server, never an issue.

Once you've had mac you never go back

Are you sure? My good book says.. "In the beginning at org0000, God created the valve and thy Nixies tubes and he then gave the people paddle switches, and said unto the people 'ye shall speak binary'. Thy supermen will speaketh in hex and those of gayeth origin may converse in octal is so desireth."

youve made your first mistake in the computer world - you bought a mac ... to be perfectly honest unless your producing music with an insane setup ... theres no real reason for owning a mac , unless your a girl and you like the 'pretty computer' and the 'simple design'

Virus free (that doesnt mean we dont have to pay), crash free, no blue screen of death. Hell I can even reset in the middle of pic editing and unsaved it returns back to where it was incl unsaved changes. Never had a pc do that, always had to get the os running again first then maybe the temp file will be hidden somewhere. Finally, only cause i dont want to rub it in true plug and play, never needed a driver for anything, UNLESS, running virtual pc!.

youve made your first mistake in the computer world - you bought a ...<and so on>'

perhaps you (a PC user perhaps?) made your first mistake by assuming that your x86-controlled under-desk-fan was prefered by professionals.

Profesionals (who are invariably boys AND girls) use mac's for stuff like :
multi-media (Director, Flash)
3D cinema animation (Maya)
Pre-press (Quark, Indesign, Photoshop, Freehand, Illustrator, Acrobat)
Graphic Design (ditto)
web development (Dreamweaver, Fireworks, Imageready)
application/database development (Mysql, postgresql, 4d)
web application (Jboss, java, just about every GNU tool)
..

oh, i forgot to add how reliable these machines are:
under my desk at home is a 5 year old G3 that's quite capable of running the current OS, act as a firewall, do print/file/domain serving ... and it's been doing this for the last 18 months - at work, i have had a mac fileserver (G4+RAID+TAPE) stay up (e.g. not a single hardware of software error) for months at a time.

face it ... the only reason you own a PC is so you can type or click one handed and jerk off about how often you have to upgrade and reinstall your OS.

even IF this were true - I would be happy. I like pretty things... cars.. girls Razz why should my computer be left out?

and, why do we always get into this silly debates everytime someone says the world "Apple" lol

Virginia Tech has the worlds #3 fastest supercomputer built at a tiny tiny fraction of the cost of the two above it (and majority below) on the list. Run entirely on Xserves. I think that's pretty cool. Imagine if it was an equivalent $$$$ game.

wow thanks for all those links and info guys

and yeah pc vs mac. totaly own prefference

i use my mac for personal/work. doing video editing, graphics, and the fact that its got a built in wireless without slowing down the cpu (unlike the centrimo cpu's 1ghz less to compensate for the internal modem)

its got everything i need firewire, airport, video outputs, usb and i've the got same old pc's at home.

thing i love heaps is the airport - i had purchased a wireless router the other day. hooked up my printer to it, and other pc's and its just wicked. you can be in the lounge room whatching tv and printing out forms, emails from anywhere and goto pick it up later in the living room.

the choice was either a 12" or 15" powerbook... 17" was just too huge Shocked the 12 is pretty cute but the resolution didnt cut it
