exhausts and mufflers for a 1JZ Wed, 30 October 2002 06:39 Go to next message
I know this has been covered before, but I'm looking a few specifics.
I'm getting a 3" system on the 1JZ, and I'm tossing up between a sports muffler or just a stocky, quiet one.
I don't mind my car being loud, as long as it's legal.
I'm thinking if I put a sports exhaust on it, with my hi flow cat, I'll need to add a resonator, but how much will a stock muffler impede the 1JZ? (bearing in mind it will receive some mods, up to 350bhp at least)

also, to go stainless or mild steel? how much heavier would a 3" stainless system be than mild steel? if it's only a kg or 2, I'll go stainless... but if it's too much then I may as well go a mild system

Keep in mind a GOOD muffler is about $160 at least.

I made my own 3.5' system and muffler, it was LOUD when i gave my car some stick.

During the upcoming hoildays i will be making another exhaust but in 3 inch and this time i will be buying a muffler.

The reason for the dia change is that 24 YO cars were not meant to have 3.5 inch systems, they made it allergic to speed humps and air time.

Keep ground clearance in mind when thinking about an exhaust.

Yeah, ground clearance can be an issue... unfortunately not one that I thought about when getting my 3" system. The cat covertor now scrapes on most speed humps if I go any faster than ~3km/h.
This might have something to do with the car being ~4" lower than normal at the same time though Razz

well, I only plan on lowering the mk2 1 or 2 inches ... so hopefully clearance shouldn't be too much of an issue.

walker/dynomax make some excellent triple pass, large volume, 3" in/out mufflers. they have excellent flow rates, and are QUIET Smile .

theyre reasonably cheap, and available through repco.

if you download their .pdf catalogue, you can have a look at all the configurations they manufacture.

cheers

You'd have to go straight through, a triple pass would be quite restrictive. A straight through isn't loud at all, my car is straight through and it's very quiet.

With twins and mongy "y" piece noise wouldn't be an issue, go for flow.

The main thing is 3 inch Mandrel bent straight through mufflers
and if you want to reduce resonation instead of a reso run a straight through(as in you can SEE though it ) small oval muffler in place of the reso and a largish (same design) rear
...VERY QUIET ...GOOD flow

so you're saying, run a cat, then one of those race-type mufflers (that have a barrel 1" wider than the exhaust), then a typical sports hi-flow muffler on the end?

sounds like a good idea.. just what I'm after

exactly !!! at 1 bar should make about 240 HP @ wheels
hey hows my typing????
Later get rid of the y section and get some twin pipes
then will make about 270 H.p at wheels but with heaps more torque

Celicamad !

Just wanting your opinion on my exhaust setup, and if you can offer any advice.

3" mandrel bent from the Y pipe (not twin pipes yet!) to a hi-flow 3" cat, then splitting into dual 3" mandrel pipes to two straight through mufflers at the rear.

The car is very quiet at idle, but drones a bit while driving. Any suggestions/comments?

Also, do you reckon I've got it setup for optimal power ? (In your opinion) Haven't had it dyno'd yet, but totally stock I pulled 185HP at the rear.

sorry i somehow missed this post
i know its old but ive been asked to reply

My advice is simple run a straight through 3 or 3 and 1/2 inch sytem with a resonator and a rear muffler (loud)

or swap reso for oval straight through muffler.twin cats is heaps better in fact my twin cats flow as good as punched 3 inch but im legal .

The ultimate system is twin 2.5 into single 3.5 with twin cats 1 oval muffler and 1 rear straight through quiet and great flow

the twins should join just past the gearbox

go see bruce at charlestown exhaust blacktown... does a great job and is a nice fella. 3inch system with big arse rear muffler sounds great for me. Is quiet off boost and as some people have heard sounds great on boost Wink Get a removable cat, and then you can have it even quieter when you want to run around fully legal.

After 'putting up with' a LOUD exhaust on my Commodore I am scared to put a big one on the Soarer because i'm enjoying the quietness. I would like a little more noise but not too much more but would be hoping for more power. Is there any chance of getting a system that only increases the noise a little but will have a good increase in power? Would a well made dump pipe of the turbo going into something like 2.5 -3 inch going into standard mufflers make sense or am I making you guys cringe??

the y-piece on the 1jz is a HUGE impedence to flow... replace that with somethihng decent and you'll get quite noticeable power gains

I've been thinking about that Y piece, you know there's a limitation on power output for cars in Japan when they leave the factory, a limiting exhaust would be one of the easiest ways to lower power, that and a detuned rom.

As much as Like the V8 sound I'm glad my brother is leaving his V8 soarer with the factory muffler setup so its niiicccce and quiet, so mr policeman doesn't look at it.

Here here Ollygt!! I love having a such quiet car!

If only you could have both a quiet car and a fast car....not that a TT Soarer is slow but I would like to go a little faster
