20v TPS? timing issues? Wed, 16 February 2005 23:09 Go to next message
I asked my mechanic to adjust the timing on my 20v becaues it seems to ping slightly on acceleration and retard on deceleration. After attempting he said there wasnt much he could do becuse of something about a TPS (throttle position sensor?) and the factory ECU settings...

He suggested running higher octane fuel, but i allready use it.

Does anyone have a suggestion or solution?

Thanks Razz

Details of how to set the TPS are here:

I doubt you need to adjust it as its unlikely to be out. Perhaps your mechanic checked the timing (thats easy) and found it to be OK and thats why he said what he said?

Why don't you check the timing yourself?

Do you have a silvertop or a blacktop?

On silvertops it can be pretty hard to find the timing marks, especially in my aw11 - even when I got it dyno tuned the guy couldn't find the marks, so he just tuned it from where it was, aftermarket ecu so it didn't matter that much anyway. I wouldn't be surprised if the guy you took it to couldn't find the timing marks.

What octane fuel are you using? normal premium, 95 octane? or bp ultimate or optimax 98 octane?

remember in japan their normal fuel is something like 100 octane I think, and the 20v does have highish compression, so just use 98 octane all the time, although I don't think mine ever pinged on 95 octane (the knock sensor probably does its job then)

Are you sure its pinging? if so, I'd probably just try turning the distributor slightly, and see if it helps, if not try turning it a little more. (thats if you don't have a timing light, or really can't find the timing marks)

Thanks for the responses....
its a silvertop. I asked the mechanic to look at the timing because i dont think its running that well. Ie: it backfires a bit on deceleration and feels a bit sluggish in take off (takes a bit to get going). This is my second corolla with a 20v, the last one ran like a dream (i put it in) and the new one (which i bought completed doesnt seem as good)

i normally use mobil 8000 or caltex vortex? i thought they were 98 octane (but i may be wrong)

maybe i should pay more attention at the pump! i'll have to start using shell optimax or BP it seems

Does anyone know a mechanic in Syd familliar with 20v engines?

Tobyoste - Yeah, he checked it and said it was ok. But said it pings slightly on acceleration and retards on deceleration and that he couldnt do much about it because it may f*ck the ecu???

My silvertop was running down on power from time to time too afer I first put it in my AE92. After checking ECU codes, running in test mode then checking all sensors systematically and not finding anything, I decided I'd better check the ignition leads and distributor cap and rotor. I hadn't checked them earlier as it seemed to run smoothly - just down on power.

There was an oxide coating on the contacts inside the distributor cap and the resistance across them was quite high. I cleaned them up and then also found one plug lead open circuit!!! I had to order new leads (which took a few days to come in) so initially the only improvement was the cleaned up contacts inside the distributor cap. But the improvement was significant from that alone with a bit more improvement when the leads were finally replaced.

However, if yours is backfiring, it sounds like your timing is out to me.

Timing marks should be easy to see on front pulley.

tobyoste...
what are the differences between the blacktop and the silver (for the purpose of using the engine manual you supplied)...?
Are they essentially the same engine or do they have different ecu settings etc? Smile

Thanks again

Blacktop is slightly later version of 20v with small increase in power. Silvertops generally have AFM's while Blacktops generally have MAP sensors so ECU's are different. The way the VVT works is slightly different too. There are some other mechanical differences too like slightly higher comp ratio and lighter internals.
