G series LSDs: IRS LSD into live carrier Thu, 17 February 2005 00:03 Go to next message
Ok last night Cambelt and I put a GZ20 clutch pack LSD into a Hilux carrier. Using the right pinion bearings, it was easy to get it to mate up and get a reasonable tooth pattern.

However, we noted that the LSD centre was shifted over to one side by about 3-4mm such that one screw adjuster was all the way in and the other was only halfway in. Further investigation revealed the reason: the plate to which the crown wheel bolts on to is 3-4mm thinner on an IRS LSD centre than a Hilux live LSD centre, hence resulting a lateral shift in the centre by the same amount.

My question is:

what foreseeable problems might one encounter by setting the diff up in such a way such that one adjuster is all the way in and the other is halfway out?

Someone out there must have done this? All you guys with G series Torsens in Hilux diffs....what did you do?

So in short your two diff centers, the IRS one and the LIVE one are different? The plate that the crown wheel goes on is thicker?

Having not looked at an LSD center before, I don't know what of these adjuster screws it is your talking about.

So should there be a spacer on the outer bearing cone like say h190etc nissan style ? yes they uses shims not the adjustable type set up like the toyota live centers .
Or a spacer on the center inbetween the crown wheel and center ? which seems to be a little on the dangerous side unless made with a inner lip retaining the crown on the center carrier . Or is there some wider bearing available ?
