i just found that the secondary throat of my carb (solex downdraught on a 2T) was never working. i put a rubber band in place of the spring that i assume has gone missing and now its all hunky dory, and she goes twice as hard too, just got 0-100 in 9sec, might get that down into the 8's with a better launch Very Happy

anyway, now that this problem is solved, another one has cropped up. the idle has gotten progressively shithouse, and now it stalls at anything resembling idle speed. i have to drive around car parks heel and toeing and look like a complete turd.

i played with the ign. timing and the AF ratio, and the idle speed and none of this had any effect. im thinking vacuum leak, mabe a hole in the diaphragm that hasnt been used for who knows how long, mabe its gone hard and ive holed it now im using it.

any ideas?

Take your rubber band off and if it idles properly again id say you are now leaving your secondaries open slightly which probably dont have an idle circuit and hence not enough fuel going in. So if this is the case fix the secondaries properly.

I assume when you said you played with the A/F ratio you played with the idle mixture screw?

the idle speed screw and the mixture screw.
i have had this problem before, before i fixed the secondary, and it just fixed its self after a day or two. i thought it was some crap bult up in the idle passage, might be the same thing again. or mabe an intermittant vacuum leak.

i made sure and the secondary butterfly is closed tightly untill about 80% throttle, when the linkage is picked up by the other throttle cam. so this shouldnt have any effect on the idle, in closed throttle position everything is the same as it was before the rubber band came along.

this motor never liked to idle, its not really streetable and its pissing me off Mad

Maybe a dose of carby cleaner, maybe something stuck in one of the hundreds of air passages? Smile

Or maybe just a vaccum leak, whatever might be strip and rebuild time.
