what's everyones opinion on which is the better engine? I've heard things about how the 2s is a newer engine and one time i spoke to toyospares and they said that the 22re was pretty much a heap of shit compared to the 2sc.

Would be a hard call, the S-series is a MUCH newer design, but it lumbered with a carby. The 22RE is pretty much the last fandango of the R-series so its the most polished of the lot excluding possibly the 18R-GEU.
Personally, I wouldn't bother with either of them, but if anything the 22RE may be better because of it already having EFI and its extra capacity. When you are dealing with such simple engines, every cc counts!

well if you listen to everybody else both are shit motors
a lot of people in the US play around with 22re motors and if your on the OCC list then you know thats pretty much all they talk about...
the 22re is straight from a hilux really it was put into a few cars but it is really a truck motor, so there is plenty of oomph from the word 'go' until about 4500rpm really a torque monster the 2sc give it a kick in the guts it will go but it dosnt compare to EFI....i have raced a lot of cars with a stock 22re beaten 5 speed vl commodores and the odd 253, i wouldnt even try in the old sa63 i used to have
that is my 2 cents
cheers Wayne

I use to have the a 22R Hilux running the EFI and Microtech D4s, ported and shaved head and slightly bigger cam and the amount of Torque was great. It use to scare the pants off the billions of Suzuki swift running around at the time, and made the car real lot of fun especially with a LSD. This got ridden off, but the engine ended up in a friends Corona wagon he used for work. Weighed 200Kg less and a hell of a lot more fun at traffic light drags.
