audi tt aerodynamics Thu, 17 February 2005 04:35 Go to next message
i remembered when the audi tt first came out some dude was driving it fast and it flipped. audi called back all the models to give em "a free spoiler".

if a car flips on a freeway at high speeds i would presume its lack of downforce on the front. wouldnt a spoiler (rear) give downforce to the rear and increase the likely hood of the front raising up even more?? how did audi give a rear spoiler and solve that problem??

They actually just spin out when going around corners at speeds in excess of something like 240km/h.

They didn't flip.

Their semicircle design doesn't allow for enough downforce on the rears.

by moving the steering wheel Shocked Shocked Shocked
Think germany autobahns, long minor sweeping turning, at 240km/ph, lack of rear downforce and car slides off road. Not a problem i aus cos of our crappy speed limits,

i remember there was an excessive speed, car flipping issue with the CLK-GTR's. Apparently the dynamics of the car were in such a way that when it reached a certain speed, the air around it would create lift and the car would get airbourne Shocked

Correct me if i'm wrong, it was quite some time ago.

Yup, that was during Le Mans. There were about three flips before Mercedes-McLaren pulled out.
At least one of those flips involved Mark Webber behind the wheel.

That wasn't an aerodynamic issue to do with speed though, they were caused by the way the car reacted to "dirty" air coming off the aerodynanimcs of the car in front.

I absolutely hate that stupid little duck tail wing they put on them,it ruins the whole shape of the car,I didnt think that it would actually contribute to anything tho Confused

I have a video of the Merc flipping. Quite spectacular.
If anyone wants it, let me know how I can give it to you Very Happy not sure of email limits.

In the video the CLK flips at least twice. Possibly a third complete revolution. And by flip i mean back flip.

Mercedes were getting run close on top speed AND lap times by other teams, so they trimmed the cars REALLY flat, to keep the tail down out of the wind on the straights, to cut drag. This made the car's undertray quite pitch sensitive, and quite reactive to dirty air like j.c.m.F. said.

Put all this together, and when the Mercedes followed another car over a crest (watch the video) it's WHOOSH-TA!

The Audi TT suffers a totally different problem - it generates WAY too much lift over the slippery roof, particularly the rear window. -Like an aeroplane wing. I think the ducktail rear spoiler is there to break the airflow, and cut the rear lift JUST enough to balance the aero-lift with the front axle.

Firstly, the TT Audi, no, let me say that most (if not all Audi) are shit ugly cars - the TT especially so.

More importantly, didn't ya know that me an Mr RA40 are a tag team. There's no competition. If one doesn't extract the piss, then the other will. I think Farkurnell, with his mature years, may also one day join this ecclectic old guys group. Slut will one day..... one day. Smile
