high tensile wheel studs Thu, 17 February 2005 11:29 Go to next message
ok, I need to replace my wheel studs to accomodate the wider rotors, and while I'm at it I want to get high tensile ones. Yes, I know studs shearing off is very rare, but call me slightly paranoid after already crashing into a wall mid corner due to mechanical failure - I do *NOT* want that to happen again.

I remember someone mentioning a place that does custom length/width/thread studs - are they any stronger than standard ones, or should I just pop off to PNPL and grab some?

when i was looking at getting longer wheel studs for my sporintah, the place i found was niceproducts, niceproducts.com.au from memory, i think they were around 4 bucks a stud, shich adds up fairly quick.

i think all wheel studs are high tensile, or i would hope so!

Yeah, im using brand spanking new SW20 studs, which are slightly longer than the mid 80s ones, and about $2 to boot.

Greg,

Longer ones at the front can be Lancruiser Series 80, they are about 8mm longer than stock.

The other option is this mob

Called commonisation. I ended up using the Cruiser iones in the front (about $5.80 ea from Toyota), and the really long buggers at the back from Nice products ($5.50 ea)

The ones listed in the catalogue are the Loooooooooong ones (73mm long NS3400), whereas the std Cruiser ones (and MA61 units)are more like 30 to 40mm

Cheers

The original setup required that I use a 20mm spacer (all hubcentric, loadbearing etc) to clear the calipers. With the CSA mags now, they are not required, but they still fit inside the mags and I aint taking everything apart to change them over !!

I'd replace the rears for the cost (you are putting a bit more grunt through 20 yo rusty ones), but they are a shit to replce with the stubs fitted, so it might be only 8.

You owe Nathan 50% of the cost savings !!!

why so hard to replace?

I've never actually removed studs, only pulled off the entire thing in 1 piece.

Getting the studs out is a piece of cake, block of wood and a big hammer.

Getting them back in requires putting a nut on them and basically pulling them through so they are wedged tight.

Fronts are easy, the rears is a problem in that it is very difficult to get them out of the stubs due to back clearance and the handbrake mechanism.

The handbrake mechanism is a prick to get back together as well !!!

Ok, using the Nice Products catalogue (http://www.niceproducts.com.au) this is what I have found

S340 - Most RWD Toyota (including MX73 and MA61)
listed as 40mm long (could not find on webpage, but am remembering from looking at catalogue)

S310 - Lots of cars, including 80 series landcruisers
listed as 40.1mm long

S312 - LN36/RN105/YN60-67 Hilux, Most Drum Landcruisers (40-50-60-70 series), Most Magna's
listed as 45.2mm long

S314 - Pajero Front
listed as 40mm long

S315 - Pajero Rear, Jackaroo
listed as 42.4mm long

Now, I think the S340 is a typo, and it should be 35mm long (or there abouts) but I didn't remember to recheck it.

The VY commie ones weren't on the webpage either.

Ok, I check the catalogue, and my MA61/MX73 wheel stud.

S340 - Most RWD pre 1990's Toyota's.
Knurl = 14.3mm
Length = 40mm
Shoulder = 8mm

That length SHOULD be 36mm.
I have measured an Aus delivered MX73, and a Malaysian MA61, both identical.

S381 - VX II, VY, VZ
Knurl = 14.3mm
Length = 48.4mm
Shoulder = 8mm

So, the best bets are.

S310 ~ 4mm increase in stud length
S314 ~ 4mm increase in stud length
S315 ~ 6mm increase in stud length
S312 ~ 9mm increase in stud length
S381 ~ 12mm increase in stud length

All are made by NiceProducts, and retail around $5 each.

But CruZida, is the Knurl diameter the same ?

This is VERY important. Otherwise, why arent S310, S314 & S312 the same. Teh knurl length may be the same, but the dia can be different

Fair enough. Did you get that info from them separately ?

Good info though for those considering longer studs !!!
