Block -> filter inlet
Filter outlet -> cooler
Cooler -> block

It's best to run the oil through the filter first, it flows better when it's hot.

usually the cooler is last, that way the oil is coolest after passing thru the entire length of hose and the cooler remains free from deposits and grime

The remote filter holders generally have two ins and outs, you use the ones on the side you want, and can either stick a plug in the other holes, or use them as a convenient place to steal oil for a turbo (oh dear, I haven't gone and suggested something silly have I?), pressure gauge, etc.
