how do you go bout using a timing gun?? i was thinking of buying a timing gun because i want to be able to independently service/maintain my car. spark plugs, oil and oil filter changes i can do...just the possibility of having to tune it..I've read in an article the basics of it i think. the light will flash on an mark on the timing belt close to a mark next to the timing belt. might need to adjust the distributor to get the mark on the belt to match up with mark on the engine.. but what do you hook the timing belt to... one goes on the battery and then what? what else do i need to know?
thanks in advance for the replies

I have seen two types of guns. One you have to pull off the spark plug lead and the gun connect in series to the spark plug ie it is "patched in" between the spark plug and the lead. And the other type (far easier) clips over the spark plug lead and works on induction. Both types then have two aligator clips which go to the battery to give it power. The spark plug lead provides a trigger for the strobe which you point at the crankshaft pulley (usually). There should be a mark on this and a few marks on the timing cover (behind the pulley). When the light is flashing the pulley should appear to stand still and the mark on it should line up with the correct mark on the timing cover, usually around 10deg. BTDC. If it doesn't you adjust it by either rotating the dizzy or adjusting the vernier adjustment on it (consult manual). If it is controlled by computer then this is all pointless (get it, "pointless", ahh forget it). What engine is it?

speaking of, how could I tell if my timing was out? I'm thinking that it probably isn't, since my car seems to get great power, but it has bloody awful fuel economy... any ideas? (beyond mentioning it's an '84 engine)

do it by ear. set it so that the idle is smooth and that it barely pings when accelerating in too high a gear. even if you have a light, the factory marks aren't always accurate and your position when looking at them probably won't be right. looking in a straight line, through the marks to the center line of the pully & crank, isn't done very well by most of the people most of the time.
