3SGTE oil cooler/warmer

Howdy, I wanted to find out what people think of the oil cooler/warmer that the 3sgte uses?
Seems coolant passes through the base of the oil filter area. Would it be better to scrap this completely and use an external oil cooler?
Or is it a good system and should be kept?
Thanks
Joel

aftermarket is always better... however if you have a good cooling system on the motor already then the std oil cooler will suffice. but external is sooo much better for the motor

Thanks for that info mate. I'm happy to run an external one and thought it'd be better.
So you'd just remove that whole coolant block thing and get a sandwitch plate thing with fittings for external cooler?
Cheers

You may not have room to keep the factory cooler anyway as your turbo manifold will probably be in the way.

Haha that is exactly why I asked about being able to get rid of it.
I heard the mazda rx7 oil coolers have a thermostat built into them. Think that'd be suitable?
Are the sandwitch plates pretty common to find?

The standard oil sooler is a good thing due to the fact taht it gets the oil temps up to operating temps much faster. The water is heated a lot more quickly than the oil and this hotter water allows the oil to come up to temperature quickly. The fact is you don't want oil temperatures any lower than the water temp so in terms of being an oil cooler the stock one is good.
In terms of packaging though it is a bit of a nightmare and has some reliability issues due to the dodgy hoses on it.

heat exchanger - oil to water.
exactly like Joshstix says. i'd rather take care of dodgy hoses then a dogey "built in" thermostat, or blocking off the air flow during cold weather & non-track or around town, stop&go driving.

Digging up an old thread here... But i'm just back to working on this oil setup. I'm going to run a remote filter and cooler.
I got an adapter plate thing. Now on the 3sgte, there is a alloy block that bolts on, with 4 holes, these go into the block. then the factory head exchanger bolts onto this.
i assume i take the head exchanger off, but leave the 4 bolt alloy block thing. as the engine block itself isn't threaded in the centre.
also, if i have room to run the heat exchanger, as well as the remote oil filter and cooler, should i? the remote oil cooler has a thermostat in it as well.
Thanks
JOel

If you can I say run the original heat exchanger as well as the external. This will get your engine oil up to temperature quicker by having it heated by the coolant.
