I notice that in most magazine articles and photos that people how are running the 4a-ge engine usually don't have the timing cover on. Is this dangerious on the engine in any way?
Cheers

It's dangerous to your typing ability when you shove your finger in there...

More prone to snapping/breaking the timing belt? The 4age is non-interference so it's not going to destroy your engine, but it's still a PITA if you are out in the middle of nowhere.

I almost lost a finger......
It does keep it cooler but it is more prone to collect crap like stones, twigs etc

I've never ever run one on mine.
Never had a problem with doing so, and in fact it saved the engine once as the timing belt wore prematurely (not even 10,000km's) and I could see it was not too far away from breaking.
I only run the bottom cover and that's to gt the timing marks alone, and I cut the bottom half of that away to let any gunk that gets into it fall out.
Been like that for fifteen years.

mine is off but the only problem i can think of is that on the mr2's the distributer wire runs close to the timing cover so as long as you keep it away from the belt i.e. clip it to something else then it should be fine

I phoned Super Cheap, Repco and even Toyota themselves and no-one can sell me a timing cover gasket for it. Any ideas who else I could go to?

Do what I did, I was inspired by the way Toyota changed the cam cover seals on my 1GGTE. I got myself some squishy rubber vacuum hosing, I then squeezed it in half and sat it in the channel where the old seal used to sit. When you put the bolts in is deforms and makes a nice tight seal Oh, and then I found the original seal
