Thanks for all the tips guys.
Whats the deal with byron bay? Everyone I talk to around here says that I absolutely cannot miss byron bay. I've had a couple people say that it is the best place they have ever been. However none of you guys suggested it. Is it like some kind of big tourist trap or something.
Jackel, no unfortunately WA is not on the list right now. However 3 months is quite a while so who knows, anything might happen.

Byron is full of tourists - avoid it on weekends as it has traffic jams. But the whole region is a pretty cool place and Byron (plus all the coastline from there up to Tweed head) is a nice place to visit.
Get advice from backpacker's staff en-route. fwiw: the best staff i've encountered were in New Zealand YHA hostels - but maybe being an aussie, the local hostels were exepecting me to do more of my own organising
get your YHA membership up to date (even if you're not staying in a YHA hostel) - heaps of discounts available to you then plus the hostels will book just about anythign for you.
btw: bus transport might look cheap and scenic but the uken trips are long, boring and you invariably get stuck next to some loonie who wont shuddup, smells and has medical conditions/disorders that they will tell you about in great detail. Leave the bus trips to nearby regional destinatations.
Trains might be an option but you chew up your holiday time stuck in transit.
