Ta22 Engine Question Mon, 21 February 2005 08:01 Go to next message
Hey Guys

A friend of mine has just purchased a 1973 ta22.
Apon checking engine / chassis numbers he has found the vehicle is fitted with a 3t but is registered with the original 2t.

I know the 2t is a 1.6L

Is the 3t a 1.8L ??

Can the car be registered with this engine or do brakes need to be changed etc?? Is an engineer cert required?

Regards,
-Phil

2T and 3T don't have a huge difference in power.
unless its a 3T-GTE turbo 3T..

prolly the 3T-GTE as it is a popular conversion.
I 'traded up' my NA 3T-EU (rated 105hp @5400)
to a 3T-GTEU (160@6000) no worries.

they just changed the engine number for me.

no engineer is required. all that needs to be done is a engine blue slip (this is in SYD and we got the worse rules) to get the rego papers showing that it has a 3T now instead of the original 2T

with mine i didnt even do that cause they rarely check cause it is such a powerless motor

As fade-e said, just submit a change of engine number to get things all legal again. You have gained a 'fabulous' 12.5% increase in engine capacity, and as far as I know, you don't need to change brakes unless your engine capacity changes by greater than 20%, given that both engines are the same aspiration, carby for carby, turbo for turbo, but not NA for turbo of course!
