what could cause this? it's just falling out of gear when it's under load, ie over taking, going up a hill... if i hold it into gear, then it's fine, but as soon as i let go... it drops out...
it's fine in all other gears... just fifth is playing up :S

It's stuffed.
Give it a few more weeks, and box will shit itself.
Find a replacement while you can still drive it.

The syncro on 5th is a kaput and basically like CrUZsida said, the box is on its last leg.

Get a W55/57/58, and an RA60/RA65 bellhousing.
You can use this box with a 1G later, but you just need a W5x to G bellhousing.

Yup, W57/58 is the go if you don't mind a bit of dicking around. If you want a quick fix though a W50 can typically be bought for $150 tops. The last one I bought was $100.

Easy to find
From any Ra60 or RA65 as I posted above.
Clutch/flywheel is the same.
