ae82 handbreak upgrade?

hey guys just wondering if anyone has an ae82 and has performed a handbreak upgrade???
when i pull up my handbreak, it strugles to hold the wheels on gravel, and wont really do anything on the roads. just in general i wouldnt mind upgrading the single piston breaking system all together.
how are the ae92 brakes? is it a straight swap over? what other options are there. i want something that is more or less a straight swap over.
thanks in advance.

well for a start the handbrake is cable driven to drums.
nothing to do with the piston callipers.

Just tighten the cable, and look into replacing the drum shoes.
Then you can do full sick doritfo's all day long.

Urm, which model AE82 ? The twinky uses dics all round the other models have drums on the back.
If its the twinky one of the levers at the rotor could be sticking. The way i fixed this was to jack the back of the car up, crawl under and as someone in the cab worked the handbrake i watched the cables. The one that was sticking i unbolted (Safety note - the spring is under tension) gave it a little lube and a little luving (WST-006:The love maker) had a little tanturm over the spring and bolted it back together and all was good.
The sticking lever on the rotor stopped the other one from working propurly.
If its drum rearend the shoes might even need adjusting.

Don't Corolla's have a drum inside the rotor for a handbrake?
I know bigger Toyota's do.
A disc for the footbrake and a small drum inside it for the handbrake...

Nar it was a rather silly idea of using the rotor for the handbrake. Good in theory, takes up less space but in practice its not as good as a drum brake.

yeah sorry i forgot about that, its a twincam (hence the talk of single piston brake system).
ive tightened the handbrake as much as it will go, and replaced teh rear brake pads. it just wont grip the wheels strongly enough. will bleeding the brake lines do anything for the handbrake? i know its cable driven, but im not sure what happens to the cable once it disabears from the handbrake in the cabin.

this happened to me a while ago - you have it too tight and must reset it
loosen the handbrake (taking both nuts off) then pump the brake several times then do the nuts back up again - this time set it as to allow about 5-7 clicks till its fully engaged

About halfway between the handbrake and the "axle line" the cable splits into two.
The handbrake works by pulling on a lever at the caliper which on turn pushs on the piston in the caliper. The easier way to understand is to climb under and have a look see and have someone work the handbrake as well as the foot brake.
While your under there check to see if both levers are moving, both have to move otherwise the working lever will not get the needed force to actuate the caliper.
And if their both working try what DTrain said. If that don't work its time to replace the cable.

I heard that if someone has replaced the rear disc pads without using a special machine which 'winds in' the calipers, they can be damaged...which means the handbrake will not work properly. Ive had 2 twin cams that have had shit handbrakes & tightening the handbrake cable didnt help.

The rear disc hanbrake on AE82s and AE92s is not very good when facing downhill. If you can park the car facing uphill they seem to work a lot better. Go figger ? I'm guessing it's to do with the position of the caliper on the rotor and whether the car's weight is pushing up or down through the dic.
Jack the back of your car up and put the handbrake on.
If you can't turn the wheels at all then the brakes are probably as good as you'll get. If a wheel turns, as the others have ssaid - check that the cables are actuating the piston which will move in and out as you pull on and let off the handbrake. Also check that the surface of the discs are not glazed and maybe try a different (softer) brand of pads.
