1JZ MX73 high idle

Howdy, nearly finished my 1JZ MX73 swap. Just started it up a few times with everything working, but it always seems to idle at 2000rpm. Im not that technically minded with cars but my mechanic has had a quick look for any leaks near the inlet manifolds and everything. Just tried the car out tonight and it started getting a bot dark so we didnt really have a chance to have a thorough look for the problem. Any ideas on what could be causing this?
Also, when we first started it up, it ran great, sounded awesome and everything was working fine. We let it run for a while and just revved it abit in drive, trying to warm it up a bit to see if the engine fan would kick in, but as soon as the temp hit half way, the engine started hunting. It would rev up to about 2000rpm then rev bak down again, and would just continue doing this the whole time we had it on :-S
Any help would be great, so close to having the swap done , after 11 months!!!!!

Forgot to add. The engine started getting very hot after a while of it reving up and down again, the bottom radiator hoses seemed fine and were cool, but the top hoses were too hot to touch.
Maybe a problem with the water circulating properly? Also thinking of possible thermostat failure?
Still have no idea about the high idle, didnt seem to be any leaks anywhere :-S

Sounds like the thermostat is stuck closed.
Did you replace it?
Did you flush the block before hooking it up to the radiator?
Fix that, then get back to the idle prob.
But it could be intake leak (very common sympton), also check that the TPS is configured correct.

Thats what my mechanic suspects aswell.
Havnt had a chance to have a good look at it yet or replace it because we were testing it out at about 10pm tonight, well last night haha.
I don't think he flushed the block.
I've had a look on the ALSC forums and they have said its fairly common for the 1JZ to idle high at about 2000rpm when cold, but yeh I think there has to be something you can do about it surely? Intake leak sounds about right from what my mechanic said. We'll have a good look at it first chance tomorrow.
I think he made sure the TPS was set correctly,I'll make sure

Dont go replacing the thermostat yet!
This has happened to me twice, from what I can gather the engine gets an airlock if you just fill it up in the radiator and hence the thermostat wont work without hot water to trigger it. So what you need to do is remove the heater hose from the rear drives side of the engine and fill water into the engine through it. Both times my thermostat has been fine!!!!

Could be that because we were in a bit of a rush just to try it out for the night, and we just poured about 10 litres straight into the radiator without any coolant haha
I'll check it out tonight and see what happens

Definately a leak in the intake somewhere, but cant find it. Are there any hot spots for leaks anywhere on the 1JZ?

Still can't find the air leak becuase we can't keep the engine going for long enough because it keeps overheating. Mechanic thinks that the thermostat must be closed shut, because theres water flowing through all the hoses, but its not flowing through the radiator properly, and the turbo and exhaust manifolds get really hot quickly after running the engine for a while.
We've tried filling it up from the heater hose as suggested by Skip but that didnt do anything, has to be the thermostat.
Hopefully as soon as thats sorted we should be able to find this air leak, then my 1JZ Cressy is finished!!!!!

Have you had the radiator cleaned?
Did you put a brand new thermostat in and flush the block at the same time?
If not, do all of the above.
Test the thermostat in a pot of boiling water too.

We havn't put a new thermostat in or flushed the block, but a new thermostat is on the cards first thing Monday. I should be able to get one from any good auto place ?

why didn't you flush the block when you were filling the radiator?
It is an easy job to pull the thermostat out and stick it in a pan just to check before you go and get another one.

CHecked with mechanic last night and he did flush the block, and hes pulled the thermostat out and had a look / tested it and its still doing it.
Its still hunting every now and then aswell but thats probably from the air leak
