icon9.gif  RA64 1G-GTE... how much oil?? Tue, 22 February 2005 13:21 Go to next message
I installed a 1G-GTE into my RA64 Celica. I modified the oil sump by cut and weld for it to fit. Since the volume capacity of the sump has decreased, I only use 2.5 liters of oil to fill up the dipstick to the "full" mark.

QUESTIONS:
Do I still follow the dipstick indicator with only 2.5ltrs of oil at "full" mark?
Should I put in more oil based on original capacity of an unmodified sump?
Isn't 2.5ltrs too little oil for a 6 cylinder engine?
How many liters of oil does a stock 1G-GTE use?

I need your advice before I wreck the engine due to too little or too much oil.

Thanks in advance.

can you estimate the volume of sump that you removed?

then deduct that from a normal fill - which from memory is 4.5 or 5 litres depending whether you replace the oil filter or not.

2.5 litre of oil sounds like recipe for disaster - you'll suck that dry when at full volume and something important like all the big ends or the rods will run out of oil and you'll then turn motor into a boat anchor.

can't estimate the voulume of sump removed, i left all the conversion work to the shop. It's my first oil change after the conversion, roughly done 5k mileage. All this time, i've perpetually checked the oil level at "full" mark. It's only now that I've realized the capacity of my sump is only 2.5ltrs of oil.
I've searched the thread and other sites as well, & some claim that the normal capacity of a 1G-GTE with an original sump is 4 liters. Anyhow, I now placed 4 liters of oil and the dipstick oil level is around 1/2 inch higher than the "full" mark.

Nevertheless, I've used the car with that little amount of oil for quite some time and has never given me any problems. Oil pressure is likewise normal.

Now, after realizing the little amount of oil used just scares me... Anyone whos done a 1G-GTE RA64 conversions please give me feedback on this.

Thanks for the help.

eeecckkk.. you need a proper front sump and a custom sway bar.

get some pictures up for us to have a look at how they butchered it

2.5 litres is way too little.

I agree with everyone else. It's way too little.

Even if it's enough oil to properly lubricate everything, it'll get hot damn quick!

Buy the front sump and pickup, and get a custom swaybar before you kill your engine!

Thanks for all the feedback.

So, what really is the normal oil capacity of a 1G-GTE? Are all the sumps of all 1G variants interchangeable? Though I'd be more than willing to purchase the sump from you guys, unfortunately I am from the Philippines. At this point, I think my only option is to modify my current sump & make it wider to create the volume needed.

I'd like to share some pics of my RA64, your comments are very much welcome. www.cardomain.com/id/ra64toms

About 4.5L.
All interchangable, just make sure you get the oil pickup as well.

I have the front sump on my ra65 and just left the sway bar off untill i could have one made. I had an aftermarket 29mm one on and the suspension shop that i went to said he couldnt make one that sise with the bends that were needed. I cant say that i can tell the differance without it on (maybe i am not trying hard enough). When i do an oil and filter change it takes just under 5 lts to the full mark, but i just put the whole bottle in which is about 200 ml to much.

With 4.5-5 liters under normal capacity, what is the safest minimum capacity I should have if I were to modify my exisiting sump? If just in case it cannot accomodate the normal capacity, Is 3.5 liters on "full" safe enough? My car is in the shop right now for the alteration, I just want to make sure that it works this time...
Thanks again.

Just make it 4.5l or save yourself the hassle and find a front sump and pickup.

Another option is to run a remote reservoir - it's a cheap and simple way to get extra capacity. The downside is it must be mounted at the same level as the sump so it depends what sort of room you have.

make it as big as humanly possible.. 7 litres would be great.. Smiley =

nice expensive oil changes Smiley =

just make sure however you modify it you end up with the drain plug as the lowest point..
