the exhaust note sure is nice!
those avalons must be like a hidden message type thing.
i'll ask the ford manager at work, see what he reckons.

Has anyone seen the new Holden Ute ad? Why is it that they always show the Holdens doing donuts on dirt?

Yeah I love that exhaust, you think that it'll really sound like that?
I wonder how big a hole I'd have to poke in the celica's muffler to make a sound like that...

it was said somewhere that they used avalons coz they look generic and hence the most like cops cars - even tho most cop cars are falcons or commodores
and its shitty how they are promoting a car that you can't even get yet - its still 3mnths away at least.

wizzfizz remember the ad where the same guys were driving the AU ute on a salt lake? they come up alongside that land speed record thing, and the guy says "he must be stuck in 2nd", kicks it back a gear and goes past. that's where the salt lake reference comes from.
ra28, alot of car magazines are commenting on how the exhaust note has changed for the better on the barra turbo/v8, and the VY ss.
and cool1, why is ford is only game enough to place avalons as coppers in a possible police chase of its v8 pride and joy?

Its all part of Ford's teaser campaign it has had for the Barra. I think the ute looks damn tough, and that exhaust note is awesome. I can't wait to see the GT version of the sedan...

Some action is better than some pansy's puttering along wanking themselves over "it's the best ute because you can just tell by looking at it", and then when they are about to hit the gravy shot, they then reckon the salt lake is the place to be to show the coppers just how tough they think they are.
I'm sorry, I just can't stand those guys in that ad.
As for the Avalons, well, they want to give themselves some sort of chance, the holden's would be too much for them.

to answer a few things
Yes - they do sound like that - GT will sound even more awesome ( better known as the pursuit ute )
the reason behind the ad was to basically say you dont need to drive like a dickhead to have a good car
the line is " you can tell its the most powerful , just by looking at it "
the saltlakes ref. does refer to the old XR8 ad - with the jet car stuck in second - also the XLS ute's ad for the snowboard behind ute
It doesnt need to do doughnuts in a paddock to prove it has the grunt .. Alot of the advertisers are swaying from the " drive like dickheads " ads because of .gov regulation promoting " speed " in advertising
Notoice all of the manufacturers ( ford holden mazda toyota ) are now doing their ads with " corners " in mind now ??
As for the wankers in the car - i think its more just a comical thing that say your average " look at me i can churn up dirt in a paddock " cockhead ad ..
Just to throw the ball back in your court !
ps re avalon - dunno there ! thats a mystery

well considering most cop cars are fords or holden, majority I mean. they wouldnt really want to put a holden in the add and most likely pay some form of royalty to holden would they?

I'd sugest that the avalon is used in the ad as they would have had to get permission from ford or holden (possibly the Gov. aswell) to use them and it was cheaper to pay Toyota to use the avalon.....
or flip side.
Toyota were willing to pay more to have thier car feature in the add then Holden were and obviously it wouldn't make sense if it was the same model car chasing the new falcon.
Well thats my 2 cents. Anyone got change for a dollar?

Not to put too fine a point on it, but...they are shit!
I refer here to BOTH the Fords and Toyota portrayed in the ad!
I for one can't wait to "see off" a new 5.4ltr Ford (of any description). (Just to show what $50k (doesn't) buy nowadays...

A lot of cars will have trouble seeing of a BA taxi. 180kw standard- pity about the weight.
The thing with the ute ad is the guys are behaving themselves on the public road, but figure they can do what they want on the salt lake. The cops are following slowly because the car is cop bait- it is just a matter of time before the guys misbehave...
How can a simple ad be disected as much as Shakespeare... or a metallica song..

tchoon gets a gold star - his analysis is spot on
and as for the barra - they go hard - and believe me - they are by far the best family sedan ive driven for performance , and handling.
camry's were twitch - magnas were just loathslone sloths - even the v6's - commodores just seem to harsh engine wise - and have no pull if you floor them
im looking forward to seeing holdens planned next v6 in 2004 - to see if its half as good as the 30+ year old evolution of the ford inline 6 ..

I agree with TCHOON..I thought it was obvious thats what the ad meant. Ive never been a fan of the falcon but the new 6 cylindar turbo falcon has 240kw. I thought that was pretty damn good of ford.

I'll back the Cressida in against one of them...(Unless it's pulling BIG numbers, in which case I'll eat a large serving of humble-pie).
I'm hoping for 230KW from the Cressida, which, when combined with around 1300kg weight, should be enough to overcome one the 240KW XRs...(depends on how much they weigh when shipped...)
Still, I imagine that will be the subject of strenuous debate.

how much boost is the cressida running??
the falcon may be heavier - but its only running about 5 - 6 pounds of boost at this stage ..
the turbo and internals can surely handle more - as in testing theve seen the turbo XR6 running comfortably at 270 Kw at the same stock trim it can be bought in , just with different computer settings + raised boost ( only slight raise here )
So against a stock one you *might* have a chance , but seeings your cressidas modified - a modified xr6 turbo id still say would flog it , and then some
Good test would be put yourself up against a VX ss ( the v8 one ) - if you can flog that , youd be able to challenge a xr6 turbo with confidence .. The commodores only a teeny bit faster ( like .01 over the quarter , and about a bees fart from 0-100 )
but the xr6 kills it in refinement , handling , and everywhere else ( see motor magazine )

Why does everyone bag ford for?
Thank ford for the 4ag!
As for the falcons, the ute looks alright but I can still picture puttin stuff in the back of it (unlike holden ute)..
The sedan would be pretty cumfy for day to day driving.. and the Arrow? the coupe looks pretty good too.
That's comming from a total toyota fan

My car runs no boost...as it runs a a 1UZ-FE.
I'll reserve my judgement until I see one on the road, although I'd suggest that a VX SS at 1700KG-odd and 225KW is going to struggle.
BTW, what do the Fords weigh?

1UZFE - OK - V8 - 4 LITRE - QUADDY
ack caps
ok - thats a good test - id figured you might have been running a GTE of some sort - my mistake
fair guess is that the competition there would be pretty even then i dont doubt the cressidas gruntiness - but havibng driven the standard Xt , and the non turbo XR ( turbo i get to drive soon !! ) id say it would be a good slugfest .. even the base model falcoon goes hard ! very so
the falcon weighs a tad more than the commodore - but from what ive read and heard from testers - though heavy it still flies
they call it the " gull " as in seagull - cause it sh$t on everything
As for the ute - its still hella practical even in the pursuit model ( soon to be 290 odd Kw gt ina ute body )
the tray at least can be used - and can haul weight .. ive heard alot about the commodore ute having issues with carrying heavy weights.. its more like a 2 seater car with a big boot - then a ute ..

ok i think they used the avalon cause it resembles a commi but isn't so they don't directly bag the commi out
i agree with tchoon's analisys on the cops behind the falcon
biased99 1300kg WTF!!!! have you weighed that thing lately?????? (you are refering to an MX83 arn't you??)
the xr6 turbo is prolly one of the best cars to ever come out of australia read the reviews its an absolutely spectacular car which i'd so love to own, power, handling/balance, braking, comfort ect.ect.ect. it great!!!!

people will guess that outside of toyota my passions ford ..
i have to agree wholeheartedly abot the quality of xr6 turbo - and most of the barra facon range ..
give credit where credits due - they took a pig ugly family car -gave it much better looks - and a powerplant thats easily one of the best inline 6's in the world ( others being the m3 beemer , nissans RB series , supra 2jzgte's )
for the money you pay for an xr6 your geeting near on performance of a GTS nissan for a lot less money .. where as the nissan might have more technological advantage - power and handling wise arguably fords catching up and has done a bloody good job .. by far they are the best locally built car here in oz - and unless we see a camry with a big banger 6 or snail on it, or a commodore with a decent rear end setup , and a 6 cylinder with even a little poke - it will hold that title for years to come

As far as tech goes, correct me if I'm wrong but the Falcon has variable cam timing and the RB's don't? or atleast the GTS RB's..
I've always liked the comfort of Falcons (My dads EL)..
i'd like to see XR6 turbo in a cortina too

all BA falcons have the variable cam heads on them , and yes the xr6 is considerably detuned - they dont want the six to leave the factory outgunning the xr8

for years I've been made fun of for liking the power and style of fords, have you seen the ridiculous magna cross ford tail lights and that ugly back bumper , but I'm gunna love seeing all the sheep come back across from the holden side then there will be no speak of "fucked on race day" " found on rubbish dump" and all the holden lover smart arse remarks and it will be "barely HOLDEN together" "commadork" and "bommadore"
GO THE FORDS , First on race day

MX83Toy,
I'm going off the rego's tare weight of 1275kgs for my GLX.
I've actually added 25kg on top of that, and the car should actually be a little lighter than stock as I've replaced the boat-anchor 7M (cast-iron block and 200kgs with the all-alloy 1UZ at around 175kgs - an instant 25kg weight saving.
Additionally, it doesn't have extra-weight items like ABS, or those heavy leather seats like your Grande does...
Besides, it looks about the same dimensions as a VB/L Crumble-door, 1 of which I owned (253 VH SL/E) and which itself had a quoted weight of 1325kgs with the all-iron V8 in it...
I'll get a better idea when I go out to the local tip and ask the bloke at the gate for some directions, (whilst sitting on the public weighbridge there )
How much does yours weigh?

What does the new Falcon need an aftermarket turbo for? The bloody thing has a GT40! You could push it to its limit but if you really wanted to, it'd just be a matter of getting it modified to make psycho power.
