Hey guys,
i just got a quote from a clutch place..
$450 fitted and installed sound right?
i asked them if that was heavy duty.. they said it would only be a few $$$ different.
it's for a AE82 Twin cam..
Anybody recomend any other places..?
is that how much they really cost?

yeh $450 sounds about right for a mechanic to supply and fit. But if you did it yourself it would cost about $150

I'm paying $450 for a heavy-duty clutch for my Supra, but that's not fitted... so I reckon you're doing OK!

oh and norbie if is from rpm it is only a heavy duty pressure plate the rest of the clutch is stock, do yourself (and the car, and of course your wallet) the favour and spend the extra few bucks for the quality

hehe alright i do i guess..
i called another guy.. who i trust todo work.. he said around $450+
my dad came after work.. told me that i should get my clutch fixed told him i already looked for quotes and said there about $450-500.
no wether togo hd or standard..
How does a Hd feel?
I've been use to my clutch beeing really deep on the floor..
1st gear+lift foot off about 1/2cm is the meet point.. Yep no clutch at all
i've felt clutches in Toyota Vans, those courier ones.. and a tarago feels pretty soft! wouldn't mind one.. but it just makes you feel lazy! it's light stepping on air.
What are the pro's and cons with the two kinds?
i think im going to be kind to the pedals and be soft on them from now

I like to need to wear my steel cap boots and give my leg a workout to put the cluck pedal down.. that way you know when you are stepping on it.

I bought me a Daikin Excedy clutch kit for $320 the other day...
Also, changing the clutch in a Corolla is a pain in the ass... I lined it up by sight with the hole in the middle of the flywheel and the centre of the hole in the block... No worries... Go to put it in and it doesn't go... Take it back out and line it up by sight again but this time in the middle of the gap in between the diaphragm in the pressure plate... Try again, it works... How gay is that!!! That means that a clutch aligning tool in a Corolla would postion the clutch plate wrong... Once gain, Gay!!!
Pete, what clutch do you have thats worth $6000??? Obviously a brass button heavy duty???

found my clutch the other day as I read the little "OS" sign on it when I was putting it on the 1UZ yesterday.
http://www.supra-shop.com/clutches.html
The OS Giken Twin disk clutch kit 87-92
also have the slave cylinder for the clutch inside the belhousing, which is supposedly another 800 or so.
Plus BS flywheel.

It's not an off-the-shelf clutch, I'm getting it custom made at a clutch shop. I've heard good things about these guys, so they should know their stuff.

When swapping clutches, I use a tiny file and take the sharp corners off the hole in the center of the clutch plate, I find the gearbox slips in easier that way. When lining up the clutch plate, I just bolt it together lightly then line it up using my the edge of the pressure plate as a guide, the center is usually too hard to see. I just turn the flywheel around and make sure the edge of the clutch plate is in the center of the pressure plate. Of course this is on RWD cars, FWD suck!

I paid $160 for mine, heavy duty, holds 300hp at the wheels nicely. Just fitted it myself. Was 1200lbs pressure plate.
Try western clutches at St Marys, they are a clutch specialist with pressure plate clamping effort tester etc. Very cheap to as you can see and they do clutches for 10 second cars right down to 36 wheel semi trailers.
But now i'm upgrading to the larger diameter flywheel from the twin cam 2.8l to take some more power and a heavy duty pressure plate.
