Can I safely run my car to empty ?

The motor is a 1GGTE and my old man put the wrong fuel in so i was going to run it out of petrol .
I'd also do it when i fill it up one day to see how much i can get out of a tank.
If anybody has done it before did it do any damage ?
can i just fill it back up and it will run ok ?
thanks guys

should be fine imo, a mate mixed premium and regular and all it did was run a bit rich. Just fill it up with the normal fuel you use next time you need a refill

Just don't run out of fuel. I hear that fuel pumps don't like working dry.

define 'wrong fuel'
If he just put regular in it, and you are concerned about detonation, just pour a bottle of octane booster in the tank.
If he put LRP in it, drain the tank, and refill it with a jerry can.

or just don;t load the motor up as much for that tank it's not that big a deal unless you are at high load...
esp with turbo.. since when you are not on boost, you have crap compression ratios anyway heh heh
but yeah, don't run dry.. i've seen Xf falcon pumps that were run dry and the plastic MELTED!!! scaaaary

OH really ! i had no idea it was that bad.
He put regular unleaded in it now it will only reach 10 psi on boost.
I'll fill up with premo when i go out next.
it's got like 7-8 litres in it at the moment so it will get me to the servo easy.
it makes a notcable difference in performance I took my friend for a drive in it and was really disapointed that it was only running at 2 thirds of what it really does.
Thanks for the help otherwise i'd be up for a new fuel pump !

If the car is wired properly (and legally) the fuel pump should stop within a few seconds of the engine stalling.
Its the fuel filter / pickup that usually gets screwed because you end up picking up all the crud from the bottom of your fuel tank when you run it dry.

If that is all you are worried about, just put in some octane booster and fill the rest up with 98 RON

or dump the tank into a large jerrycan and you'll wont have to buy mower fuel for another year.
your fuel tank should have large removable nut at bottom for easy draining - have hose nearby incase of something flamable happening.
be shocked by the amount of crap that's washing around the bottom of the fuel tank

A hose won't help things much.
You need a fire extinguisher that is rated appropriately for fuel.

Hopefully you can get it sorted. I've been in Mookies car and it is a monster! I don't see it as a major issue though, just pick its octane level back up to compensate I assume.
Pity we don't have 98RON down here in Tassie.

yeah i wouldnt run it dry unless you want to replace the
fuel pump, if its not high enough octane just add a jerry can of the correct octane or a little bit of octane booster.
unless your pump cuts out before which is a good feature.
from what i have heard, if you have a lower octane fuel you can drive it at low rpm safely. high octane is to stop detonation
which occours at higher rpm. obviously dont drive like this for ages lol. anyone know different?
