7mge conversion into 1984 cressida Sat, 26 February 2005 09:43 Go to next message
Hi everyone
im pretty new to these forums.
Hopefully some of you can give me some advice.

My dad has a 1984 cressida with the 5me(single cam 2.8L engine)
which is on its last legs. He has the opportunity to purchase a 7mge engine really cheap off a guy who just wants to get rid of it.
How hard would this conversion be eg. having a different wiring loom made up, shortening the tail shaft, making up engine mounts etc.

also what do you people know about these engines and how mcu hwould the conversion cost.

any help would be much appreciated as the old man only has a few days to make up his mind about getting the engine.

cheers
-Andrew

As far as engine conversions go, this is a pretty easy one. Because they're both M series engines there are no major modifications required; the engine mounts are compatible, the bellhousing is the same so you don't have to swap transmissions (although it might be a good idea if it's auto), and if the 7M sump is incompatible with your crossmember you can swap the 5M one over.

Most of the work is in the wiring, but the 7M-GE engine management is pretty simple so as long as you can read a wiring diagram and wield a soldering iron you won't have a problem. Then there's all the little things like hooking up fuel lines, cooling system, alternator etc but none of that is much of a challenge.

The whole process is pretty much identical to putting a 7M in a MA61 Supra which has been done a zillion times. As mentioned above it's pretty well documented on the CelicaSupra forums.
