Coilover sleeves - how to choose what size? (and what size for xA6x?)

When buying steel coilover sleeves for converting stock struts, are you supposed to buy them a few mm wider than the strut, or an exact snug fit?
Also, does anyone who's done it before know what size to get for xA6x (and are xA6x celica and xA6x supra struts exactly the same diametre?)

if you got it to be slightly bigger and you welded the bottom on then it would wobbble around wit hthe load of the spring and you wouldn't be able to weld it to be perfectly in centre of the strut.
measure the strut the way I did and wrap some sttring around the circumference of the strut.
Measure the length of string and divide that number by pi to get your diameter (it is 100% easier if you take the wheel off).
with a bit of heating of one object and cooling of the other I would say the fit should get nice and snug. and welding would then just be a matter of holding the sleeve in place rather than trying to centre it on the strut.

That's what I thought, thanks. It's just that, when getting quotes, once place said 'your strut should be [x] diametre, so you need to get [x+2mm] sleeves.

this is my opinion, not necessarily the right one.
John probably would know from Importbitz or the many other people that have used a sleeve kit on here better than what I would.
It just makes sense to me however to be a flush fit.
