W58 info Sun, 27 February 2005 09:23 Go to next message
i was thinking of using a w58 behind a 500hp 13bt in a 1976 bmw 320A.

will this hold the power well? its going to be a road registered track car.

what is the 5th gear ratio? im trying to figure out final drive ratios. i want to have it geared for 300kph top speed.

physical dimensions of this box would be great, so i can measure up the tunnel and mod it to suit.

imho no it wont handle the power unless you drive it very gently. a mate of mine has a drag rx7 with a 13bt in it, with 400hp, and he is sponsored by a gearbox specialist, and the box had strengthened internals, and it was lasting for around 10 1/4 mile passes i think. you might be better off getting a W58 dog box built, would cost more but would be cheaper and more reliable in the long run. g/l dude. the s4/5 5speed will JUST hold the power, but racing with one is asking for trouble. guru make a dog set for the casing, but i was trying to aviod that.

An R154 might be the go. I'm sure someone has made an adaptor kit for the 13B.

martin donnon had this box let go on him and he was not making the numbers that im looking at.

yes this little rotor will be making bags of torque. my mates motor is making 650NM at the rear wheels, on 10psi, standard turbo. all the work is port and intercooler.

i think ill be making near on 1000NM at the wheels, tought on gearbox's

R154's have a known weakness with a collapsing thrust washer - that's what happened to Martin Donnon, and it has happened to other people I know. Fix that and they're pretty hard to break.

Get a billet steel intermediate bearing retainer plate from Marlin in the US - it's normally sold for the R150 & R151 wide-ratio 4x4 versions of the R154

Also, there's a bit of info in here too...
