18 RG Rebuild Kit Wed, 29 May 2002 05:53 Go to next message
Gidday All
I'm about to start a rebuild on my 18RG after it being blown up by car thieves. Skull - Mad

I'm in Canberra and wondering if anyone knows of a good source of value for money rebuild kits for the RG.

The current 'broken' motor was rebuilt about 10,000 K's ago and used 40 thou over 9.7 pistons. I haven't established if those slugs are useless but I will assume they are. RGU pistons are OK as I plan to turbo the beast at a later stage.

Many thanks

Kev

There you go RA23. Knew someone here would know. Thanks to crostek.
BTW crostek, How do I wire in that distributor with the ignitor and coil from a 22re? And then that to the car? If you don't know it would help even to know some principles behind electronic ignition, I don't know much about it yet.

As for the Ingitor, you need a driver/ amplifier to convert the small pulse signal for the dissy to a power pulse that will trigger the ignitor. There is a electronics kit you can get from http://jaycarstore.webfactory.com.au/index11.ws4d it is a Universal High Energy Ignition Kit that will run just about any dissy and coil, the kit is a CDI (Capacitor Discharge Ignition).

This will run your ingition quite well till you put your computer in to contol the ignitor.

Not quite correct.
The small pulse signal, if running points, isnt a small signal at all... infact itll run the coil by itself quite well (what its made for). Only if the dizzy was made for use with electronic ignition does it *have* to be used with an ignitor unit before the coil.

Also...
The "High Energy Ignition Kit" isnt CDI at all.
Its the equiv of a new cars electronic ignition that can be used in an old car.
They might (if they still stock it) have a multi-firing CDI kit if thats what you want.

Since your running the 18RG, the dizzy will have points.
The best thing to do would be to use the orignal 18RG distributor and then use either the HEI kit or a CDI kit.
If you want to move up to EFI or a real programmable ign unit at a later date, dont bother with a kit... just use the 18RG dizzy like normal until you get the EFI or programmable ign unit at the later date.

I use the hall effect dizzy and ignitor with a Haltech F7 and it works great. When it was tuned they plugged the vac advance for some reason.
Any thoughts?

they disconnect the vac advance and disable the mechanical advance on the dizzy and use to computer to set all the ignition curves. I haven't got the EFI up yet so I've just got it stock at the mo.

Hey Will
I know what you're saying but the F7 is a fuel only comp so the ignition stays mechanical.
I might reconnect it and see what happens (see if it detonates on my 9.7 pistons) maybe not!!! Cry

oh, I see. I got no idea then. I'm fairly new to this stuff anyway. Maybe with EFI you don't need vac advance no matter what?? maybe someone who knows will jump in and explain it to me.

Idea to advance or not to advance?
All depends on the setup, type of manifold (has line fitted of vac advance), any modifications to dissy, modifications to the engine, all effect when you need timing advanced.

Some EFI units control fuel and ignition and some fuel only, or like the unit I have has got both modules separated.

In some cases the vac unit is left connected if it suits the setup. The dissy and manifold are matching and the modifications to the motor allow the curve from the dissy to work well.

But mix and match bits and the vac unit may not curve the dissy at the right time or right amount. A little testing with a timing light and a dyno well tell if all's well. (Costs a few dollars but you can be sore its all ok).

My dizzy hasn't been modded in any way and I use the standard RG EFI hardware so I dunno what the deal is.

Do you reckon that the dizzy could have an effect on utilmate performance for my set up?

I could try the Jaycar programmable system if it would produce a worthwhile gain. Otherwise if it ain't broke.. Grin

I just put a complete RGEU in my ra20 and I found the best way to deal with EFI is go all stock, get it running good, make notes then make additions if need be. My little RG has 288/272 cams and the little pistons and it hauls butt well. Here in the states we dont have the RG EFI computers so I wired the stock 22r comp and the fuel curve is great. I left the vac advance off but I also put the orignal RGEU dizzy in it also. Good Luck!!!

The riginal EFI is fine if you don't want to go too wild in your mods but if forced induction is on the crads then programmable EFI is the way to go.

I know the japenese companies have every gadget under the sun to 'fool' your stock EFI into working but after you factor the costs into it the cheaper option is programmable.

I'm happy with my current setup of Fuel EFI and conventional elecronic ignition but if something can work better then I'll give it a go.

My plans are forced induction either by blower or turbo so either a remaped dizzy or programmable will be needed anyway.
