Hi

i decided to go for a t50 from a ae86/sprinter, and use with the 4age in my ta22, i read that my old t50 and ae86 t50 are diffrent length, do i need to make a new hole in the floor for the shifter?

i really would like to avoid that, so if there is a way without this im happy to know about it.

thanks in advance

Very Happy

unless someone can answer that specifically the best thing to do is unscrew the shifter and put the box in and see

its not so much the length as thats the same overall but the angle and location of the extension housing is different where the gear shift protudes from the box, you may get away with leaving the hole the same size. But have you considered the problem of the two different spline sizes?

Thanks for your answers.

So you think the aeT50 shifter will end up about the same place as my old?

yes the spline diffrences is bugging me, but i think i got a hold of a ae86 tailshaft, and i been told i can use one part of that and one part of my old, and it will be the length i need, is this correct?

if i cant get a hold of a ae86 tailshaft, is there a more common car i can use the thingy with the splines on that will fit the 22 spline box? maybe its also 22 spline on w50/w55 boxes? or any other good ideas how to solve the tailshaft/splines problem?

thanks again

The 4AGE based box has the shifter come out about 4 inches back further. The whole rear housing can be swapped over however to get it back to teh right spot.
You need to swap the housing, shifter and selector forks. This was covered in Bill Sherwoods site. The 4A and TA shifters are different so teh whole lot has to change.

Hi

If i change the rear housing, will the box be weaker again then?
I have read that the 20 spline box has smaller bearings and has problems with leaking oil, can i change the rear housing, without getting any of the weak parts from the old box?

thanks again

when you change the rear you are just using the external housing, the shifter and the selector forks (because the length is now different). This will not have any bearing on strength. The strength issue relates to bearings/gears/input,output shafts etc depending on who you listen to. None of these change. The only internal bits you are changing are the selectors that connect teh gear lever to the syncro hubs.
Have a look at both boxes, from the rear they are identical apart fromt eh shifter location and the shifter itself.
