I'm going to have a look at some old corollas for my transport to get me to work. One that has come up I 'm going to check out tonight is a 1986 model, 220k's on the clock. Did this model have EFI? This one is a carby, what engine would it be 4ac / 4a-gc ? Are they a good run around? What should I check when thinking of buying it. What are some good mods for this?

The corolla you're looking at, being an 86 model is the AE82 corolla built between 1984 - 1988
the only EFI versions of the AE82 (Corolla and Séca) are the Twincm 16 models with 4A-GE engines. The other models, SE, CS, CSX and Spirit came with 4A-C (1.6L) or 2A-C (1.3L) single cam carby engines.

Being a 4ac, is this a good engine? Or would I be better spending the extra to get the twin cam 16 / 4A-GE?
What are the specs for both engines?

my mate had the 4ac, in his corolla, the dam thing just would not break, it had 300,000klms on it, and he thrashed the fuck out of it, the only way it broke was when it blew a radiator hose at redline in 4th.

If u want a run around that is tuff as nails then get the 4ac engine if u want a more sporty car save up for the twin cam. I can vouch for the 4ac being tuff a friend of mine has one in his rolla and its up to 348,000 its a 85 model and we've taken it rally style thru crawford forest done dozens of burnouts. and it still runs fine it even has a smoother idle than mine and its only done 134,000km!

How does the power / torque of the 2 engine compare?
On the street is the twin cam much quicker off the line?

Well if you want something with any balls at all, the 4AC certainly isn't gonna leave you with a stretched face... but it is pretty reliable. The 4AG ones cost a bit more, but are still reliable and have got a little bit more grunt to them - depends if its worth the extra $ to you!

My G/F's car is a 1.6L 1988 AE82 CS Sedan with 170K on the clock, it runs smooth and has always been reliable (it did break down once, but it was running funny and I was on the way to the mechanic to get it fixed anyway, so it didn't count)
Basically as everyone says, they are bullet proof, one of the most reliable corollas you can get. Take care of it by changing the oil and you'll never have a cheaper transport.
I wouldn't go past anything less that 1.6L. I've been in a 1.3L and they are too slow... 1.6L is a good compromise, has a bit of stick to get you out of trouble around town with good fuel economy. (Forget being able to burn past someone on the freeway, they don't create much more power up in high rpms, unless you have the necessary mods)
