Hey All,
well it comes down to this.. i'll be in japan for 2 years, starting June.
what i'd love is to hear from people who have either:
a) been to japan, and know of interesting car places to go, where to buy bits n pieces etc etc, and what areas are popular.
b) have organised freight from WITHIN japan, to australia. what companies, how to get it to the docks etc etc.
c) have sent bulk stuff to japan (ie belongings)
i'll be living in Sapporo, Hokkaido for the first year, but might be transferring down to Tsukuba (NW of Tokyo) for the second year.
i's also like to hear insights from people that have lived there... rent, food, phones, internet, auction sites good for car parts.. all of lifes necessities .....
and no, i am not taking orders for parts.... yet...
Cya, Stewart
PS, and Kendo experiences too.... i wanna whack things while i'm there

I got a mate who lived there for a year. I'm sure he'll be happy to give you some ideas. You got MSN messenger or something?

best auctions in japan are the yahoo auctions.
http://auctions.yahoo.co.jp
be sure to have a copy of a GOOD translation program like Systran (drop by if you need it).
When *IN* japan, there are a multitude of auction houses where something rediciulous like 60% of used car sales go through!
MAKE DAMN SURE that you buy the most PERFECT car when you get there, so that you can privately import it upon return (have to own it for 12 mnths from memory).
My recomendations = MANGO. Nothing less than.
Local postal service in japan should be able to send most smallish items to australia, but anything larger you will want to be using something bigger. Easiest way would be to back off someone who already ships containers or large items to australia and pitch in - but finding the person is usually the harder part.
Parts orders.... unless i ha shitloads of spare time, id be scared to start taking them

Make that 2 Mangos, pwease.
Hey, if you have time, try and find old slotcars, whilst over there. I should not say this, because i want some, but the yanks pay a huge amount for them, if you can find them.
Jap slots are rare and VERY worthwhile investments.

a:Touge' ! -yahoo auctions is primo #1 best happy buy.
b: A buddy's Dad lives in Japan, he airfreights his bits, and just wears the ludicrous cost. Talk to Aussie-based importers like Slidewize, Importbitz etc. for container space I s'pose.
c: dunno
Tsukuba you say? you should try and get your head on a Best Motoring DVD shoot! Maybe just get on the circuit sometime . . . .
Best of luck over there anyway !

sigh, i was waiting for that heh heh...
iie, chuumonshimasen!!
'auctions' has been bookmarked.. have seen links from there.. just forgot
is systran what babelfish uses? that would be MUCH appreciated i'll try to pop round in the next coupla weeks.
hmmmm, i thought i read it was 2 years for personal goods? i will have to read up on the wholecar/parts/goods importation thing before i go.... more shukudai...
wahhhh... i was thinking TE27, KP61 (N2? style), R34GTR, etc... we'll see ... not sure how many cars get driven in 2m of snow tho...
(Witzl.. base for niseko is currently up to 500cm!! wahhhh)
yeah track time would be nice, but i need a car first
as for parts orders.... to be honest i will be too busy for the first 6 motnhs or so, as i am there for research purposes, but i may try to get some small things and work up from there... (then cars then houses then ocean liners and buildings... wait.... maybe just cars)
