Get your radiator flow tested and cleaned.
Get a new thermostat.

When does it overheat? cruising? freeway? traffic? thrashing?

Start with radiator.
Should cost about $80 if you take it out and give it to a radiator shop.
New thermostat is about $16
Get Toyota genuine on this.
Flush the block with the garden hose while the radiator/thermostat is out.
Put it all back together and refil with Toyota Red.

If it still overheats, get a new waterpump.

After this if it still overheats while driving, BHG is a lot more probable.

If it overheats while idling in traffic, the viscous coupling on the fan is dying. Get a replacement from a wreck.

If it still overheats, BHG is a lot lot more probable.

BHG symptons are very varied.

In doing this other stuff first, you may eliminate the need to remove the head.

However, if it was a BHG in the end, I'd recommend doing the waterpump, thermostat, and radiator anyway.

So you are not wasting any money.

Depends how you want to do it.

Doing it properly would require
new ARP studs
new HKS MHG
gasket kit
remove head, give to workshop to check for warpage, and shave it.
Deck the block (may require removal)

Doing it dodgy it just remove head, insert new gasket, check head for warpage, install gasket.

Random temperature fluctuations are a classic symptom of air pockets in the cooling system. Supras are well known for doing this if you don't bleed the air out properly. That's the first thing I'd check.
