18RGEU vacuum hoses Thu, 03 March 2005 13:10 Go to next message
Can anyone enlighten me as to where all the vacuum hoses on the intake manifold are supposed to go? When I bought the car he said "I just slapped it together so it runs".
I am having all sorts of trouble like missing all the time at idle or anywhere really, under no/little load ie coasting.
Mechanic charged $800 to tune the computer, you would expect a running car, anyway....

Thanks
Lachlan

Missing at idle and low load, hmmm.
What computer are you using?

Last time I saw this it was bent valves, sorry.
Could also be vacuum leak ie. those mystery hoses, that is throuwing out the mixture.

Ignition timing? 12degrees BTDC for the 18RGEU.

Could also be cam timing. It f it is at TDC for no.1 and you put the top off it, there are two little timing marks just near the timing coggs. They look like square notches out of the circular thrust flange. These should be in the 12:00 position, vertical, both of them.

I'll see if I can put in a picture, as I can't remember much from last time I saw one in a car.

Now to try for the picture, I hope it both helps and works.

its a microtech MT-4.
hrmmm for some reason the pic looks a little different to mine. my intake seams to have a crap load more hose connections on it and heaps of them are plugged.
thanks for that, i'll have to check all of your suggestions.
ill see if i can get get some pics of my setup.

MT4 - like you said hrmmm.

I imagine you would have a vacuum hose going to your MAP sensor (inbuilt I believe into the ECU, yes?)
Also an air temperature sensor, yes?

It should be noted that the picture I put up was taken before any of the gear that has to be used to actually run bits of the car was attached.

Note: some of the stuff that you probably have would relate to an idle up switch for when the airconditioning is turned on.
This is usually located on either the last or the second-to-last vacuum point on the engine side of the plenum from the front towards the rear of the engine. Does it look like some sort of diaphragm?
How about a big hole on the underneath for the block breather?

Am I sounding correct?

ok, these are the hoses that are connected at this present moment.
yep there one going to the map sensor in the ecu;
one going to the charcoal canister;
two (for some reason) going to the dissy (not sure if this is ment to be);
fat hose to the PCV.

had one to the fuel regulator, but dissconnected it after really eratic behavour.
still leaves a few not connected.
i was wondering, does it matter where hoses go where?
hopefully i'll be able to get some pics tommorrow - should get my car back.

ok after a bit if fiddling, it isn't missing anymore but no idea what we have actually done.
my vacuum advance has 2 hoses going into it. we disconnected one and it started idling properly. Stops missing all together. apparently the two connections are for advance and retard. where are these meant to go on the manifold? i mean I'm sure its there for a reason.

ok. day 3.
as far as i can tell from a little googling the inner diaphragm (one closest the distributor) is the vacuum advance and the outer diaphragm is the retard. Is this correct?
I also assume the vacuum goes the the vacuum advance nipplie thinger - doesnt suck at idle, etc.
The other, the retard, goes to a constant vacuum.
does this sound right?

also i dont know why it doesnt advance properly. i get the same advance when its connected as when its not connected

just digging.
if i look at the picture above, i can almost suss it out but after putting mine all back together mine is a little different to the above picture
beterthenu may have the solution but if i could confirm with someone that has an 18rgeu that would be great.
my dizzy has 2 vaccuum points on it one closest to the dizzy one furtherest away
which one of these goes to the throttle body (if any)
and which goes into the plenum
i also have the smog gear as well so there is a little black diaphragm thingy with 2 points onit.

my guess is:
furtherest vaccumm point on dizzy goes into black plastic smog thingy in the inside port, then the outside port on the black plastic thingy goes into throttle body on the left port.
closest vaccuum point on dizzy goes into plenum behind throttle body, on mine it connects to a t piece which goes off somewhere else (i am at work so can't confirm)
one thing mine doesn't have looking at the piccie above is a hose going from the left port on the thottle body to somewhere behind the engine, where does that one go?

can anyone confirm any of this?
