Nothing really involved in taking off the cam cover.
Just make sure you don't get any crap in there while its off.

Can I ask how you plan on "freshening" anything up just by removing the cam cover?
Or do you mean you just want to remove it to clean it?

Depending on how old your seals are you might want to replace the cam cover seals while you've got the thing off.

yeh I didnt think there was much special attention needed when removing it.......thanks for that....
By freshen up I mean clean it, wire brush attachment in the drill....as it looks quite shit at the mome........then some smoothing.....posibly a lick of paint.........
yeh the seals will prob need replacing.....can do that later though...not to worried at this stage as my car is off the road for a while, just doing things I can do within my resources...
thanks again

All i can say is they might be a little hard to remove, by that i mean they maybe stuck too the head.

A few gentle taps with a rubber malet or similar will surfice. TRY NOT TO USE A SCREW DRIVER TO PRY THEM OFF, even with new seals it may leak.

Oh yeah if your gonna paint them, be sure to use primer, or get them powder coated.

Cheers

Steve

there are nuts holding down the cam covers, undo them and then under the nuts there are round plastic washers, need to py these out one by one with a flat head screwdriver, once all these are out the cam cover will come off. `

Are you talking about the rubber seals/gaskets that go around the cam cover? Toyota have none and they have no idea if or when the are getting them back in. Repco/Super Cheap/Autobarn don't sell them either as the part has to be bought genuine.

IF you have the time you may want to try this:

Take cam covers to machine shop and have them stripped and cleaned properly.

Take cam covers and have them powder coated.

Cost me about $80.

Mine went from this:

hmm. today I had more luck after removing the washers (which were pretty stuck themselves).......where can new washers be purchased......?
As for getting new seals........what do you mean "through trade"........?? ($38- not liking that to much, ohh well shoulda left the covers on..only need one new seal aswell...doh..)
powder coatin, looks smick......was just gona paint/spray it....and polish the letters.....much the same as those
- whats type of paint should be used for this....?? (the engine paints at super cheap ect are shit colours, is it best to get 2pak then if Im chasing a irregular colour.....??
Any other suggestions..?

Cheers 4 the replys

those "washers" don't slip over the stud, they screw on, at least the old used brittle that i've had do, and would need to, to seal effectivly.
use a screwdriver to loosen them slightly, and then un-screw them, else it they are just levered off, their ID will get ripped up & won't seal the threads anymore.
even when their hole is OK and will seal the threads, their flat surface that contacts the cam cover may be a little offset & deformed, and since they probably won't be put back in exactly the same place, they'll slightly leak.
sealer stuff is OK, just use as little as possible.

just put a blob of fullysikaflex around each thread and then remove the brittle rubber shit off the washers and place the metal part back on top....seals it good but i dont know what its going to be like to remove later...looks easy enough though... Rolling Eyes

also the engine enamel works great...its cheap...and u can paint patterns on the cam covers... Razz

on mine i got the japanese rising sun red and white flag thing..

those washers on cover have threads. i taped a flat head screw driver on mine to "spin it out" or unscrew.

engine cover spray from autobarn should do the trick if u know what ur doin. if u plan to spray ur cam cover while its off just run a search, im sure its been discussed b4.

new cam cover seal - ACL # JN603 around $13 from any auto parts place. Unless you have a blacktop/silvertop which is totally different, that is only for the smallport 100kw. Complete valve cover set (bolt seals, 2x cover seals) is VCK603 and is about $50.
