Rack mounted with no rubbers Wed, 09 March 2005 01:25 Go to next message
Hello, has anyone driven a car with a steering rack mounted with no rubber between the rack and the mounts on the xmember?

Wondering if this would cause the feedback to be too harsh or not.

Cheers
Joel

Custom mounts will be made for both the xmember and rack itself if I took this path. So probably a alloy or steel mount would be holding the rack to the xmember.

You will feel every little bump on the road through the steering wheel.

so basically you have a plate off the xmember to mount the rack...

then a rubber/urethane chunk/rectangle etc...

then the rack ontop of this...with bolts running through all three?

Cheers

Yeah I got a plate off the xmember,

the passenger side of the rack is round and I have a rubber mount off a holden astra i think that has the right diameter hole in the centre for the rack and it has a flat base.

then on the driver side I use the original ke70 rubber mount as that already has a flat bottom.

the rack is spaced up 6mm for correct height.

then i have holden astra & hmm another car cannot remember metal brackets over the mounts they are like a complete loop down to the base (unlike the ke70/ae86 brackets that are a very low profile). then bolts through the brackets, through the plate with nuts on the bottom.

i'd be worried about the constant rattling causing wear and damage to both the mount and the rack... you may need to bolt it a bit too firmly to hold if it's solid too.. whereas with some compliance, everything is nicer Smile... you don't have to have thick urethane Wink

steering boxes are all solid mount, and the idler is solid on a few, so i wouldn't worry that much.
all race cars are solid!
Citroen racks(ID, DS & SM) are solid mount, and the only rubber bushing in the entire steering & suspension is a very small one on the inner tie rod to rack joint. all suspension arm joints are tapered roller bearings, even on a 2CV.
