hey
just wondering if anyone has put a jza80 6 speed into a ma61. can't find any info on it. besides the obvious price of one and putting it in how hard would it be.
just curious

Norbie is the only one I know planning on doing this.

If you don't have a JZ motor, it will require some extensive custom work to bolt it to another motor.
The clutch setup is different too
Then there is the issue of the shifter coming up 6" further back than stock.
But I beleive there are solutions for this.
Finally there is the fact that the driveshaft is completely different to normal style, so a custom one is needed.

Expect a good 5k to do this.

Dropping in a 1GGTE and J160 6 speed is a much cheaper option.

I don't know much about Manual Gearboxes but if the R154 is 6 speed, here is a write up...

r154 is a 5-speed - the 6 speed v160 (?) is fatter than the r154, and has an integrated bellhousing (making it a pain in the arse to mate to anything but a jz engine)

I'd guess you would need some minor tunnel mods to fit it in, also you would have to do something to the external shifter mechanism like what CrUZsida was talking about. http://www.turbosupras.com/images/technical/V160/gearbox%20getrag%20top%201.jpg

Good luck if you go ahead with this and keep us all posted on how things go.

Gearbox = $3k at best (only if you're lucky).

Then you need custom flywheel and clutch, unless you're lucky enough to get a stocker that isn't rooted (unlikely).

The you need a custom tailshaft as mentioned (they don't use a slipper yoke like the W58, R154 etc).

Then you need to butcher the shifter so it doesn't end up in the back seat, which requires the services of a good alloy welder/fabricator.

Then you need to bash the crap out of your transmission tunnel and/or hack a giant hole in it.

Finally, you need to find a very tall diff ratio (6-speed JZA80's come with a 3.2:1 diff) otherwise first gear will be so low it will be a waste of time and you'll take off in second all the time... which kind of defeats the purpose of having a 6-speed in the first place. And forget about getting a ratio that tall for an MA61, they don't exist.

So you have to ask yourself, do you really want to invest all that money and effort just to have one extra ratio which you may never use? The only reason I'm doing it is because the V160 is damn near indestructible, and the combination of my engine and driving style means I need a gearbox like that. The last two 5-speeds died a spectacular death. Sad

I wouldn't be sure about that.

Its smaller than an R154.

I'd say its very W58ish in size

what are you doing about diff ratio's norbie?
there's a slim chance I may be getting a close ratio w58, and I'd need a super-tall geared diff for that.

Peewee: note the extra length of the box. The tunnel gets quite narrow towards the rear of the W58, so any extra length is likely to cause issues back there. I guess we won't know for sure until some poor sucker tries it though.

Draven: I already have the 3.58:1 ratio which AFAIK is the tallest available for the F series. If you can find a taller one please let me know! I'm sort of considering a diff upgrade, eg JZA80 A series (similar to older G series) which is available with 3.2:1 ratio and torsen centre. Expensive but would be nice...
