22R - 22RE head change over Sun, 13 March 2005 11:25 Go to next message
Hi all....I am new to this forum....hopefully I will get this right... Cool

Anyway I have a 94 hilux 22r and I am thinking about converting it to the 22RE version and then maybe a turbo later....the question I have is will a 22RE out of a RT 142 Corona (86 model)head fit straight onto my motor???? As I understand it there is a difference between the 22R and the 22RE crank???? So far I have only seen photos of the motor and it looks a bit different than mine????

The motor is a bargain and I would be only interested in the head, injectors etc and the computer.

Any help would be great....

Andrew

P.S Any output figures on the standard 22RE setup would be greta as well as any wiring loom (ecu) info... Rolling Eyes

check if your head on the 22r in the hilux has 'pear' shaped exhaust ports. If you do, you can swap on the head with no worries.

Otherwise if you have just circular exhaust ports with a smaller circle above for EGR, then you have an early head which equals domes pistons, which equals no go.

With the turbo thing, I have a manifold and rb20 turbo to suit. Afaik, there wasnt a locally made toyota with a 22RTE in it.

EDIT: Also there isn't any difference in the crank. Or atleast I've never heard of such a difference.

Is there anyway I can check to see if the head will fit without having to pull it down (ie engine numbers etc)??? My manual shows the "pear" type over both inlet/exhaust valves but I am still un sure. At worst I will do a straight engine swap after I do a bit of work to it if that is the case. Will the earlier model RT142 22RE bolt up to my 94 Hilux??? Does it matter if the motor had an auto behind it??

As for the turbo you are right about none of them finding their way to australia in that configuration. But if this RE will work I will look at after market turbo and even perhaps a cam and chip.

I was going to got the 1uzfe option but there is to much to work in changing diff ratios....bady lifts etc. This way I keep everything relativly standard and hopefully get about 100+ kw once it is all sorted.

there are no performance chips for a 22RE ECU - if/when you go turbo you will need to run aftermarket ECU and most likely get larger injectors.

before you head down the cash extraction path of custom turbo/efi setup - see how much improvement you can get from larger exhaust (up to 2 1/2"0 and extractors first.

also - you usually cannot put an engine into your car that is older than the engine that was in it previously. If the recipient car is a '94 model, your donor engine should (for the purposes of registration and engineering) have the same or better emmissions/ADRs than the original motor.

Check this out.....it shows a chip for the 22re (corona).

My understanding is the original chip is a surface mounted type and therefore you can not get a chip in the real sense....you have to replace the entire ecu with one that has had the chip re-programmed.

As for the extractors...my 22R come with them already and yes I agree with the bigger exhaust. I have put this off untill I work out which why to go with the engine change over.

Your point about the ADR regulations has me thinking????

you dont need to swap the head for the efi. all the manifolds will bolt directly to your original head. I have converted my hilux to 22r to efi
