goo to attach windscreens? Sun, 13 March 2005 13:02 Go to next message
i've got to replace windscreens in two cars - my RA40 and an AB cordia - both have big, long cracks from heat & country driving

I'm guessing that new glass will be easy to locate than intact windows from wreckers but am unsure of what the black sticky sealant is that they use to install them.

the freak who put in the original RA40 glass used so much goo on the side windows, it's still oozing out 3 years later - so rather than listen to some weirdo rabbit on about how he's going to make millions out of the internet - i figure i'll do it myself.

tia,

is this with rubber surrounds to hold the glass in?
original is often a tar based goo... there is black "windscreen silicon" that you can use.. i'd check that it is a neutral cure first tho.. don't want vinegar eating away the metal there.

for the ones where the goo is what holds it in, i think it's a polyurethane of some kind...

helpful huh Wink

Some bonded-in windscreens are structural.

Not sure if a RA40 is though.
Probably only applies to newer cars, but I have read figures of 30% structural strength/rigidity just from the windscreen.

When I was restoring my TA40 I was going to take the screen out, but the more I looked into it, the more I doubted it was a good idea.

As you have got to do it, might as well get some advice from a windscreen company, they may also sell you the right adhesive.

slightly related but how do you get the windscreen out, can you break down the black goo with kerosene then come back a day later and have one guy push the windscreen carefully from the inside while the other guy "catches it" (i can see this ending in disaster Smile)
or do you just have to go slow and steady with a butterknife to break the seal (maybe dousing the knife in kerosene)
or do you just bite the bullet and have someone remove it for you (noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo oo!!!)

for ra28's andra40's specifically

how are you getting yours out chuckster?

hiyaz,

RA40 relies on the goo to bond the glass to the frame and has chrome strips covering the join.

I don't think it's a key structural member per se but it does add some rigidity to the roof, firewall and front pillars - when it gets a big crack across it, you can hear it creak/grind in sympathy with the front suspension.

I remember the windscreen freak using kero to clean up.

barned01: I think i'll remove it with piano wire - is a two person job but easier/safer than modifying a knive to cut thru the join (get strong spring-steel knife, put in 90 degree bend, drag thru join, allow several days to do this)

I think a kero wipe will only soften the surface of the goo. Unless you make deep cuts to get the kero into the join you won't soften it much.

i'm expecting both to break along the cracks so both cars will have vents tapped up and big areas of double-sided tape to catch fine glass particles.

i'll ask the windscreen people if they supply goo (was going to get prices from obrien and novus).

cheers and ta,
thechuckster
