It would work but the code list isn't the same.
i.e. bridge TE1 & E1 terminals on the check connector and then flick the key to ignition and the codes flash out via the check engine light on your dash.
Codes can be had here: http://www.lextreme.com/Lex%20DxCode.pdf
Lextreme has heaps of info on the 1UZ... definately a worthwhile site / forum to become a member of if you've got a 1UZ.

Just one more question when you pop the cap of the connector cluster are the terminals TE1 and E1 clearly labelled? And when they say "short" the terminals they mean bridge one to the other yeah?

There should be a label under the cap of the diag connector showing whats what.
I always use a paperclip to short the connections... i.e. stuff one end of the now straightened paperclip in TE1 and the other end in E1.

Thanks for the excellent help so far guys.
I did the diagnostic last night and I pulled only 1 error code from it number 41 which is TPS. The car drives fine with no problems so I can only assume its a little out of calibration or something. Where to now?

Just check the TPS
http://www.oz-enet.com.au/~peewee/1uz_ecu.gif
Look at the wiring.
Make sure the TPS is in IDL when the TB is full closed, and that the resistance varies in a similar manner to other Toyota's, when you move the throttle plate.
The throttle plate could very well just be gummed a few mm open by crap.
Clean it with some carby cleaner, reset the ecu, take it for another drive, pull the codes again.

Pull the EFI fuse for a few mins.
Cuts the memory for the ecu
