And how strong are they going to be? Strong enough to attach a catch to, or are they going to require bonnet pins?
Also interested in weight reduction...

why bother with fibreglass?? yeach!
if you make a mould, be done with it and do carbon fibre. fibreglass is heavy (if you want it strong) and why is anyone going to want a pussy light/weak bonnet? the only reason youd do this is weight, so be done with it, do an alloy semi skeleton, then drape with carbon fibre. youll need custom bonnet fixtures, but itll be light as, and if you are careful, finish with a clearcoat, and have a sexy open weave.
bugger the fibreglass imho
cheers

Ed to your statement

the american boys carbon fibre hood buy were going to be around $1000. Im sure i can make my car go alot faster with $1000 than lightening the bonnet.
But thats just me

Ummm, Fibreglass isn't that heavy these days and it can be be strong as all f#@k!
Back in the black and white days you would have to use many layers of fibre matting and lots of resin to get a nice strong build! But these days you can get nice stitched and woven matting that you use with good resin, and using this stuff you dont need to use lost of layers which gives you a much lighter product!
In my opinion, using carbon fibre on a street car is just a total wank factor!

and what exactly is the purpose of a fibreglass bonnet on a street car?
im thinking of pure performance benefit only anyway. hence why bother with fibreglass... just go straight to carbo...if yore going there that is...

Haha, i dont think they are that bad, they have a performance factor, but it would be the very last thing one would do to a car to drop 1/4 times i think. The cheaper fibreglass bonnetis more affordable but i dunno.
Those cars that i have seen with bright yellow paint and the bonnet painted black to make it look like a carbon fibre bonnet, now thats the wank!

can't be that wankerish if bmw does in on the M3 CSL, also skyline r34 GTR N1, and i think some of those spoon hondas.
but i do see the point - and if u had it, u couldn't get it painted. looks way better being able to see it woven

What I am getting at is that a fibreglass bonnet wouldn't be that much heaver than a carbon fibre bonnet! I'm talking like 1kg!!! So lets see, You could get a carbon fibre bonnet for $1000 and you could get a fibreglass bonnet that weighs 1kg more and its $400..Now which one do you think is bang for buck???
The only real advantage with carbon fibre is thats its strong! But who the hell is going to be sitting a pallet load of bricks on a bonnet anyway??

the price works out at about $500 per bonnet the advantages i can see are as follows
, lose weight from exactly the right part of the car
15-20 kg weight reduction,
and for those of us with turbos easy addition of cooling/cold air vents or ducts as heat build up can be a bit ofan issue.
as far as i caan see, carbon fibre is not only ludecrously expensive it is also overkill for a street car. fibreglass is plenty strongfor the application, i checked one out on a 1JZ race car that the p[lace had built and it was sweet.

Hmmm... let me see now, considering the bang for the buck factor, the car weighs say 1200kg (I'd bet on the 1300 mark) and you are shaving off 15kg... hmmm... oh my! a whole 1.25% reduction in weight! wow! yeah, and you are going to shift the center of gravity by how many cms? I don't know mate, spending 500 bucks for on a fibreglass bonnet for "performance reasons" sounds like total wank factor to me! I agree, there is a number of other reasons one would want a fibreglass bonnet (and one of the most enjoyable ones being bragging rights!) and it has its place. However calling carbon-fibre on a street car a wank factor... hmmm.... Now why would street car need 600RWHP?
If I was using going to composite body parts (not necessarily a bonnet)it would be carbon fibre not only because of the reduction in weight, but other mechanical properties.

no need to get so defensive people it was just an idea, and youll noticed i mentioned that it would also be good for better aair flow as turbo motors can have some serious heat build up issues. and even though you scoff at 15kg weight reduction a carbon fibre bonnet is only going to lose you another 5-7 kilos on top of that max. and cost twice the price

The only way that you would save that amount of extra weight is if the person doing the fibreglassing was doing a shocking job!
As I said before, fibreglass doesn't have to be that much heaver than carbon fibre!

If the carbon fibre bonnet is only 1kg lighter, and cash is a problem, buy the fibreglass bonnet, and simply take a dump before you go driving ...
