locking a dizzy?

Hoy Thar,
when locking a toyota VR elec dizzy, would it be sufficient to just remove the advance weights and then replace the springs?
from what i can see, only one spring does anything until full mech advance and is pretty much just a stop, and it appears that there is enough tension in the other spring to keep the top shaft from rotating. the only forces on it will be the inertial forces during accel of the rotor i guess.
has anyone directly compared removing the wieghts, vs making up a solid locking plate?

I would lock the plates up with a spot of weld rather than risking slop in the disabled advance system.
Why are you locking it up any way?
is it for after market ECU?

i would suggest removing springs and bolting/welding together. even without the weights it will rotate against/with the springs as you accel/decel the engine and hence stuff up the timing signal.

yeah i would normally agree with both of you.. but it is a brand new 4K elec dizzy and they are not so easy to come by, so i would prefer a non-destructive method if possible.
i looked at making a plate up, but i would need fairly high precision to get the holes the right size and the right spot, and i'm not keen on having any balance issues.. i'd rather find stronger springs (for a long term solution) than weld it up.
plus it will only be for 1 or 2 weeks anyway
the worst that would happen is that it would retard spark during accel, and that can be 'tuned out as such' by giving a couple of extra degrees for WOT advance perhaps..

what about using a heavy solder like an alloy for radiators?? guess whos got some
the alloy solder holds my custom speedo cable together ok at rpm so it should be reasonable for the weights?
