Cranking up the boost with my 3SGTE Tue, 15 March 2005 03:15 Go to next message
Hi everyone,
I have an idea of what i want to do with my beast but i wanted to see if anyone had any suggestions or saw any potential problems with my suggested setup.
(See signiture for my car's specs)
Currently it runs at around 11psi and i want more. So i was gonna get a turbosmart bleed valve from a fellow toymodder, a fuel cut defender from ebay (http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&a mp;rd=1&item=7961236453&ssPageName=STRK:ME WA:IT) and a Holley water injection kit.
I was hoping to get up to about 14psi, anymore and i'm told that my ceramic turbo will explode.

Does this all sound like a good idea? Any perceivable problems with what i have mentioned?

Also i've read something about water injection allowing for more timing? Now i'm certainly no expert on timing. Will me ecu automatically advance the timing or does this require a tune? I will be getting a new timing belt in the next few months, should that be setup differently to allow advanced timing?
I feel like a bit of a n00b Embarassed

without knowing the condition of your motor - my guesses would be dont run anymore than 15psi on a ceramic item - ive also heard the ceramic linings will start to " delaminate " at higher speeds + youll have lovely little fragments being sucked into your motor

Also - once again - your HG will probably say goodbye if its never been changed .. thios seems to be the fisrt thing to give up at anything greater than standard boost - though luckily - TRD , HKS , and a number of other companies make excellent swap items ..

before raisings boost - id be focussing firstly on cooling the charge better ( im guessing you still have topmount gen2 intercooler - going bny the scoop ) , gwetting your tuning right with something greater than a piggyback bandaid + then look at raising your boost ..

having run a gen2 - with FCD and electronic boost controller - i netted 115 AWKW at 14PSI ...

Im now doing 120 AWKW apprx - on 12 PSI - with a much nicer standalone safemode tuned ECU - with mapping now to 20+ if needs be

* edit - forgot to add - i believe my turbo is a steel gutted ct26 - as ive been told by a number of sources now the australian spec Gt4's got the same turbo as group A's which are definantly Steel guts*

Well im only doing it coz its gonna be cheap, all up i think it will be under $300. Also, i was thinking maybe a little while down the track i would get my turbo hi-flowed and up the boost more, which i could only do with the proposed mods.

Still think youd be better off with a frontmount swap - heatsoak = not your friend for any power Smile

Pick up a cheap EVo lancer core or a JZA70 core ( 2 times as big as your topmount ) pipe it up with some stainless - and enjoy the cool night air Wink

Eventually i will get a front mount, when i get a real job and some real income. I was thinking that i would be able to use the water injection with the front mount when it happens for even better cooling.
Do know how much a front mount would cost? Considering i could get a decent intercooler for about $300.
It's all a work in progress.

Well i'm gonna do it, i reckon it will be fine. It the most it looks like it will cost a little over $300, at the least just over $200. Plus plenty of hours labour by myself.
Thanks to everyone for their advice tho.

Wouldn't the IC end up taking the majority of the ceramic shards out?
I also have "heard" a lot of "stories" about such things but have never actually known anyone who has had it happen to them.

I assume that the problem would be mainly with non intercooled vehicles and that most other people who claim they had the problem are mistakenly thinking that the fact that their engine and turbo died simulatenously was because of shards off the compressor wheel not just because they tried to get 30PSI out of their stock turbo and motor.

Thoughts?

Yeah fair enough, but i'm not willing to take the risk just in case for a few extra psi. 14 will do for now.
The boost controller is in the mail and i'm about to order the water injection kit.
