speedo cable Tue, 15 March 2005 06:51 Go to next message
Guys
a fortnight ago i dismantled my dash and disables my AW11 warning chime put it all back together and every thing was sweet. Now two weeks later my speedo has stopped working. I undid the dash to inspect the cable and the speedo itself.

The speedo appears to be functioning i gently pushed a phillips head into the baqck of it and spun it, the needle and odometer were moving. So i think its OK.

I went out for a drive up the street (with dash undone) and the speedo cable connector was visible. The little male cable piece ( that drives the speedo ) was not spinning while driving.

Does this mean I have to replace the cable. Im pretty sure it does, thought i'd check. Cheers

You could have a busted speedo drive...
Or the cable could be fugged...

It is easy to unscrew the cable from the gear box, then you can turn the end of the cable and get a mate(if you have one) to watch to see if it turns at the other end.

cheers

by spinning both ends of the cable you can diagnose that as the problem,, if thats what it is!
if you check both ends of the cable and its all sweet, your problem is a little more serious!

speedo drive is the gear in the gearbox that spins the speedo cable

If the speedo drive has died, the cable WILL NOT MOVE...
Hence, you are either seeing the drive broken, or the cable jammed in your test...

What you need to do, is get under the car, get the cable out at the gearbox end, and spin it there, get a mate to watch in the car, and hopefully the cable DOES NOT SPIN (As that points the problem straight out... replace the cable)

if the cable spins, then the problem is BEFORE the speedo cable (Speedo drive, or the magnetic part that makes the drive move...
