4AGE Mods. Worth It? Wed, 16 March 2005 08:47 Go to next message
Will I notice any difference on a JDM 4AGE if U ported and polished the head, heavy duty valve springs and bigger cams without a new computer?

Cheers

depends how far you want to go!

larger duration cams will work with stock ECU up to 264 or 272 duration, depending who you talk to(wadeapparrently say 280!). you can get that kind of duration to suit stock lifts i believe so the springs and port and polish arent really necessary. reshims i notice are likely necessary tho.

anything more than that and you WILL need a new ecu, or at the very least a piggyback to alter fueling. once you start going the wilder cams (prolly 280 and up) then you might find some benefit in the springs and p&p work, but with a stock ecu just stick to what cams you can afford and leave it at that...

i put up a post a while ago for another bloke asking about cams - somehow id dug up a page with a list of cam durations and specs you might find quite useful...

Difference... yeah, good difference... prolly not.

The stock computer is generally designed to operate best with the engine in its original configuration.

One thing we need is specifics. Bigger cams?? that could be anything from a mild 264deg to 300+...

Port and polish? I wouldn't bother polishing anything honestly.... Porting! Not unless you need some serious breathing.

Heavy duty valve springs, well, depends on the camshaft profile.

Usually 'bigger' cams will yeild more power, at the cost of low end torque. But I would seriously consider at the very least a piggyback computer to tune the AFR if changing in hotter camshafts.

EDIT: I'm slow Razz

Thanks for the info. What's the best mod to do first up than? So I port and polish alone would do jack crap?

get bigger/better extractors, panel filter i think is better for 4age, but if you want a bit of suction noise get a pod, cold air intake and the cams Very Happy

Without spending too much on a n/a, there wont be a massive difference until you go turbo or s/c, but you'll feel it Cool
