i would like to know what peoples opinions are on engines conversions for the humble ae86.
im chasing 12 sec quarter mile times(roughly), its gotta be reliable(ie not a rebuild every couple of months) but i also want to use the car every week at a local motorkhana. i already have a 4agze stripped down ready for a rebuild but i was thinking maybe a 3tgte.
or am i crazy??
thanks for any feedback

12 second quarter mile times and motorkhanas don't go together.
3t is a step backwards. stick to a GZE with a mild boost increase. you won't do 12's,or even 13's,but it'll be reliable.
if you want both, buy another car to use a dragger. sprinters are wasted on a drag strip.

what about turboing the gze??? shouldnt that be good for reliable 12's.....and if i get the 3tgte i have fully rebuilt i cant see how it would be a step backwards....i personally reckon it would be better due to its extra 200cc....
someone correct me if im wrong

If you are going to all the trouble of an engine conversion to the 3T-GTEU you might as well go to the 3S-GTE. Being 2L it will give a bigger capacity, is a newer more advanced motor and has higher horsepower potential than the other two motors. This motor does have some dificulties when converting to RWD (gearbox, bellhousing, firewall clearance) but to achieve what you want it is the most appropriate and cost effective choice.

4AG turbo is a good choice in that it's not too hard to get in there, can readily give the power for 12s and still light enough to go round corners, and will put up with a reasonable amount of abuse. My main piece of advice is that stock rod bolts don't like 11,000rpm - if you're rebuilding it, get some decent bolts!
Otherwise, 3SGTE is the go, if you don't mind messing with it a little more initially. Also, if moderate abuse a reasonable power are on the agenda, don't use a stock t50 gearbox or you'll end up with that lovely crunching noise!

mrshin- the turboed 4agze would be a good choice due to the fact that it is a lighter engine yeah?? to what extent would i need to mod the engine (ie what turbo, intercooler etc) would i need??

Yeah, 4agze is good simply because its an easy fit, not too pricey and fairly compact/light. As for what you'd need, depends what sort of power you want! Get a custom intercooler, whatever turbo you can afford, and if you want bigger power, you'll need bigger injectors etc. - Don't skimp on management/fuel pump/etc. either, especially if you want it to run well and last!
Bottom line is, how much have you got to spend?
