ae82 twinky fuel gauge problem Thu, 17 March 2005 04:09 Go to next message
hey all,
just bought a 1988 ae82 twinky off a mate of mine. today it started doing doin things ive never seen a car do.

its got full tank of fuel and wen i turn the car on the fuel gauge indicates the tank is full but then slowly decreases and goes to empty. while driving to work, the gauge would go rise from empty to full as my car speed would go up...but then go back to empty wen the car stops.

im not to sure what the deal is, but i just got a new starter motor in it....so not sure if it is affecting it.....

any ideas or solutions.....

feedback appricated

Very common unfortunately.

I have learnt to live with it and refer to my trip metre. 450km and the light will start showing. 500km fill up.

The problem is in the sender unit. It gets loose on the pivot of the float which means sometimes it makes better contact than others. (at least that's what it is on mine)
You can check it out by lifting up the back seat base, then follow the wires, undo the screws and lift it out.

Toyota wanted $200- for a new one, but mine still works most of the time..
